I wonder whether social networking sites such as face book, orkut, myspace, friendster.. etc... can really make money for me. I have joined few of these sites but do know know how to get benefit from it.

Please share your knowledge with me if really these sites can make money.

You mean the more people we get to join their site, they will pay us. Is it what you mean. They will get money from advertisement but how we get money from them. I'm still confuse.

You get no money...Unless you can build a popular app. Other than that you need to build your own site. Those are just social networking sites, to locate friends and family...

It is a very good question and I think that the web 2.0 wave is now going down and we will see very soon how many sites will be able to survive.
eBay has just hired Deutsche Bank to help with selling Stumbleupon!!! They bought Stumbleupon for $75 millions less than a year and now they need to sell it as it is not profitable... Can you believe it? Stumbleupon has never been profitable, who said it was cost $75 millions a year ago???!!!!

Yes you can make money from Facebook by advertising on them, having a popular application. Bu the simplest way is that you can make money by driving a lot of free targeted traffic to your website.

I know a lot of people used to make money off of selling bulletins on MySpace to advertise sites and services. However, this is only effective if you have a TON of friends, otherwise pointless. Also, you have to be careful because they hare clamping down on SPAM big time.

how do you use myspace bulletins? what are the rules? Can you not advertise an affiliate product directly, do you need a landing page? I'm looking to know how they can be used.

These social networking sites are known to be good traffic generators especailly if you know how to linkbait. Backlinks to increase page rank for your site is what you can aim for at these sites. Fast money? I doubt.

I am the owner of a social networking portal. Community sites definitel have well defined revenue models. Most important amongst them are:

    1. Advertisements.
    2. Subscriptions
    3. Shopping module ( integrated in my social networking portal - www.linkpetals.com )

Mostly from exposure and backlinks to your site. Use www.socialmarker.com for a good and semi-automated way to do it.

You don't get any juice from networks like MySpace. All their links are redirected, so that goes right out the window.

I think the idea of making money on social networking sites is from promoting products and services through this medium, that's all. You reach a wider target audience on social networking sites.
