Depends, if it makes it harder to crawl and spider, you'll probably get penalized for your rankings for specific search results. But if your site is bad in Google anyway, don't worry about it and go for it.

If youre page HTML outcode code changes then googlebot may read it differently, which MAY affect how it sees your pages - could be a good or bad thing I suppose!

Try to remain user focuses, pick a design to best suit your users. Maybe have an option to revert back to the old theme?...

Maybe add an option for a user to change the theme at their discrepency...

Maybe build upon the current theme if it works fine at the mo and looks good...

Whats your website address? Maybe we can help...

My initial impression (as a new visitor) of your website is:

    -What is it?
    - Maybe add a slogan alongside your logo that would give it away, possibly add it to the Index title, or above the baby blue bar add a tiny bar with brief (very short) explanation.

    -Page size!
    - Page is very long! Possibly add an excert of the article summary in a the home, with more link e.g.

My title in the current font being used
Excert limited to x number of characters [Read more...] [Comments]

    -Right menu cluttered
    - Possibly adding RSS feed options in the footer, or an individual RSS feed in article view.

    Other suggestions of mine

-- Add language options (flags) right justified alongside the site logo.
-- Add a top bar with some links

    Hope this helps...

Changing the 'look' of a page won't directly affect Google in any way. The code:text ratio may be an issue, but won't be evident unless you measure that before and after the switch.

Prominence may also be an issue that may improve or degrade with the new template. Do the first human-readable words on your web-page appear earlier or later in the code (view source)? I always try to get the main text on a page as close to the top of the HTML code as possible.

Finally, with the addition of any code, it's possible to introduce (or fix) any improper HTML code. This may have an effect on spiderability and search friendliness. Even if it works in a browser doesn't mean that spiders see the same thing.

There are a multitude of tools on the web to help you measure these factors and they are all available with an upgrade in one place on my site.
