    Hi there kind people,

I am going to be making a new website and need your help in choosing a cms to run it.

Here is what I will need..

Lets say the site is about basketball.
    - I need to be able to create new pages and catagories and the usual stuff
    - members area where they can upload images and write content, stories, pm people ,have a profile for others to see, keep a record or diary.
    - needs to be seo friendly
    - easy to use
    - I also need to be able to have like a shop or be able to set up an affiliate shop.

    Can you please help..

I was thinking wordpress but not sure if all that is possible with wordpress?

If so what plug in will i need.

thanks in advance for your help..

    Regards
    Waza

You can cobble that together with joomla pretty easily. I am not a huge fan of it but it works quite well and is easy to use once you get your head around a few things. You can also use Drupal but it requires much more extensive knowledge of php.

    http://www.joomla.org/
    http://drupal.org/

hope that helps and hope you folks are doing ok down under,

Drupal looks pretty hard? will look more into it..

And thanks My family and i are among the lucky we are in the middle of it all. Floods up north and fires down south.

I is so sad, and there are a lot of people suffering and my heart goes out to every one of them.

No problem and glad to hear everyone is ok. Drupal is not that bad but you may need a bit of php assistance to make it all come together. It will bridge with forums and has a pretty sound e-commerce component. There are loads of folks floating around that use it regularly. They have a huge community as well. It is just not as dumbed down as joomla is.

Do you think wordpress will do all this? I like the look of wordpress, i just dont want to start the site with it if I cant do all these things.

I also want people to be able to comment on other members photos/videos and stuff.
I am searching for plugins and mods so far not to good.

No, wordpress does not really possess community related features of that sort. You can have editors and all that good stuff but not a members area, etc. It is really just very robust blog software. You would wind up having to bridge a range of apps like a forum. That is always a tad problematic in terms of having to update things.

    GamesPond,

Drupal is not that hard. I suggest you install it on your machine and play with it as it comes. Then try to modify a few things. When you got that under the belt start adding one module at a time and play with it and modify too. Start with the the big modules that you are very likely to use, like CCK and Views.

Leave the shop part for last. There is a good module for it, very popular, which is called Ubercart. It is just complex and large and until you are getting a grip on the Drupal framework it will result in confusion and frustration.

In term of time investment, if you know some of the basic web development stuff, like setting up a server, setting up apache, php, etc., I reckon you'd play 1-2 days with Drupal plain, 1-2 days each with CCK and Vies, then maybe half to a day with other modules you may want to use or investigate and a bit longer, 3-4 days with Ubercart. You don't need an in-depth knowledge of php. You may, in fact never touch it. That will be sufficient to get you very close to what you may want. The last 5% may be different, but that is true of any CMS or framework.

    Enjoy

hi there gamespond, it is possible to do all this with wordpress, including the ability to sell online, and memberships, there is capability to control user access to different features within wordpress and ability to assign different roles to each person outside the default settings.

i am creating a community for selling handcrafts online based around wordpress with different features such as gallery and having a shopping car with integrated blog and drop down menus. presently i am working on a Jquery slideshop to integrate..

checkout www.myhotart.com.au esp the demo for package 3

Joomla would be the best to have all that integrated

    - I need to be able to create new pages and catagories and the usual stuff
    Core of Joomla does that
    - members area where they can upload images and write content, stories, pm people ,have a profile for others to see, keep a record or diary.
Community Builder would be a good extension
    - needs to be seo friendly
I use 404SEF which works great
    - easy to use
    - I also need to be able to have like a shop or be able to set up an affiliate shop.
VirtueMart is the first that comes to mind.

    I hope this helps

The thing about joomla for me is that it is sooo slow, I mean last attempt that I had with it gave me a massive headache. Organizing the site takes up half the day, then learning how to use new modules and components is just as bad.
Personally if joomla was a little more like wordpress is now then yeah would be great.
I have heard wordpress is more for blogging though..

I tried setting up community builder as well but didnt quite understand it... if there was a video tutorial for all the mods and coms that explained it they way I want to use it then that would be great but most of the tuts out there are very basic...

Thank you very much for your thoughts and comment though eclipsemedia

maybe, just maybe, the thing about you is YOU're slow.

how can even dream of running a complex web site with community and shop
without knowing neither php nor css nor xhtml nor having the guts to just
read the manual or a few simple tutorials ?

just save time and pay a web developer to do it all for you,
why wasting time and money trying to do it yourself when
you don't even have the minimum requirements ?

people love wordpress excatly because it managed to
give complete illiterate users the breeze of setting up
their own blogs and now they think all it takes to run a cms
is a few clicks here and there like in WP.

mods/coms : they're FREE, what else do you expect ?

besides, if you find joomla hard to use dont even think
about messing up with Drupal !

go for wordpress and dont look back.

WOw that was a bit harsh, maybe I am slow or maybe it's because I am fairly new to joomla and other cms and I guess thats why I posted here asking for help, not for someone to put me down and call me slow..

I could learn joomla, but honestly I just dont like it. I have an old site that I use joomla with and very rarely do I update it because it gives me a headache. Why, because the backend is slow and for some reason the sites that I have tried it on loads slow. If you forget to save a page or module you cant edit it unless you go back and click save and then go back to edit the page again. setting up sections and catagories for me is a waste of time, all I want is catagories..
oh and I do know css ,xhtml and a little php and I've read the manual and watched video tutorials about joomla.
I can see that it is very powerful and all but it's not for me.

Thanks for your comment, not that it helped any..
