how did myspace get so BIG ??

how come myspace got as big as it has so quickly?

no one stole/copied it when it was just starting out?

did they have a giant campaign running? (if so i missed it)

did they only submit to somewhere like PR web?

does anyone know any info how this site could end up so huge?

myspace is not a new website but just recently(year or so) really took off.. Heard stories of myspace parties in Cali, NY and Hawaii.. I am sure more people know the whole scoop

but basically, once it got past a critical point, it just became viral. if you don't understand how, you really need to take a closer look at it-- you can learn a lot from it, and I don't mean just for copying the site theme and making your own social networking site.

 

I saw myspace.com ALL OVER the warped tour last year. I'm going again this thursday, we'll see if they still promote themselves there.

 

I agree completely. I think we should develop some kind of topical cream to prevent teenagers from spreading these dangerous diseases.

 

I think the theme of the site is what it makes it popular.Gaining friends is one of their goal.

 

Read "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell--it'll take you a day to read, two tops. In brief, a word-of-mouth epidemic (how did you find out about MS?) occurs when three types of people are present: mavens (people who know it all), salesmen (people who make the emotional connection between a product and an object), and connectors (people who know people in many different fields). The mavens get something down to a science, the salesmen make it easy to market (or sticky), and the connectors spread it to the right people.

I haven't read that book in a while, so my best guess is that Tom's inital programmers were the mavens who knew the ins and outs of online community, Tom's business school chum and co-founder was the salesman who made it stick with consumers, and Tom was the connector, throwing MySpace parties to cater to the music artists and celebs who would take MySpace the rest of the way.

Perhaps someone has their own interpretation of how this became an epidemic.

Ha, I read that book about 6 years ago. Good read.

 

It is in a lot of markeintg magazines I know that their is alot about it on Tv eg incidents on the site...also people just spam profiles on forums and music on their got MASSIVE big bands joined they maby got hell LUCKY aswell ...

 

weren't they the first to do the system where they could load your hotmail account and email all your friends with an invitation for you? Also seems like their system is easier to use to access schools, and find your classmates then some of it's competitors.

 

On a teenager point of view,it's really cool that you can customize your own page even without any background with Web Page Designing.You can add video and Music in your own page.

 

MySpace was on the news this evening in New Zealand as a band called "elemenohpee" are using MySpace to increase their fan base ......

 

What a way to advertise their band.Not bad.

 

Friendster was first IIRC and then came along MySpace. Friendster just had the capability to add a friend and that was it. MySpace brought along blogging and many other personal features that Friendster did not have. That was the downfall of Friendster and the beginning of MySpace.

 

It's really good for them, as NZ is not a huge country anyway (Only 4 million people). Now, the band is going to Australia on tour and they already have a fan base there (thanks to MySpace)!

 

I had a look at myspace -- i think the deisgn is well bad. very hard to navigate and use.

I dont think anything will knock it off the top spot, but i bet other sites with an easier to use interface could get alot of bussiness.

 

MySpace used the power of "words of mouth" , frankly i still believe in the "brick and mortar" marketing strategy and it's still very effective.

 

yeah word of mouth is probly where 70% of myspace users pop up from...

Also thoes spammey emails they used aswell where frineds could spam a shit load of people at once lols

It is because it was the power of mouth, when friends signed up, they wanted to be famous and have friends, therefore told their freinds to sign up. And it is went like a viral process. Just like gmail and the invites. Zorpia with their invite system. Word of mouth is the strongest advertising tool ever. If you have something that is worth talking about, chances are that thing will be famous.
