Indians, Pakistans, and ect... Using the word "dear" wrong

Hi,

First off this is not meant to be a racist post in any way. I was just very curious...

Here is my story.

For the past few years whenever I had done business with Indians, Pakistans, and people around that area (geographically speaking). I have noticed them calling me "dear".

Like NOT "Dear Charles"

But I mean "hey DEAR, are you done the work yet?"


and I correct them every time. As "dear" is used for a sexual partner or someone you love. Also the only exception of an old senior calling someone dear..."

I also had some people going like "hey love, how much longer will it take"

So i'm just curious if the people that teach English in that area are teaching it wrong. Or...

Again THIS IS NOT RACIST IN ANYWAY. I find this very interesting, and I am just curious if that is the way you guys use the word "dear"

And yes I was really bored, and had nothing to do when I decided to make this post

Well I haven't faced anything like that yet, but yes you are right. People do make these kind of mistakes.

I have learned few things which I like to share.

Don't say to your client or business partner "Hey william, I am done with your work" should say "Hello William, I am done with your work". Hey should be used when two friends or same-age people are talking.. am I right?

Also, don't say "yea" but say "yes".

Please correct me if I am wrong

But ya i have seen that whatever you are saying.

I use it only for my special friends !

 

I get that alot, but it it doesnt bother me as i just ignore it.

Yep I get that sometimes from Indians and other Asians.
It makes them sound gay

 

lol ... i am indian and i too have noticed this from other people... but ignore it i mean we know what they are actually try to say

 

When I hear "thank you dear", it makes me think that I'm a women

 

We all make mistakes. Just take a look at the title of this thread.

There are a few mistakes I'd like to point out.

1. Pakistans should have been Pakistanis.
2. ect should have been etc.. (etc is always followed by a period.)
3. It wasn't necessary to use a comma followed by 'and', then an etc.. "Indians, Pakistanis etc." or " Indians and Pakistanis" would be more appropriate.

And yes, there are many more mistakes in the first post of this thread and anyone reasonably aware of the basics of English grammar and usage would be able to identify them.

I have come across Asians using the word 'dear' in the wrong place. But as most Asians are not native speakers of English, they are bound to make such mistakes. Not a big deal. We know what they are trying to say and that's perfectly alright.

As far as grammar and spelling are concerned, most Asians fare better than the native users of English.

 

I think the British also use it in this casual manner, and people from Pakistan and India learned to speak english from them, not americans, so it's not "wrong", it's just their manner of speaking. On the other hand, I'm sure the british would have a lot to say about the american dialect...

 

For the record, I have never called a sexual partner 'dear'.

And won't.

 

Sometimes people make their own local cants .... For example, "REPEAT AUDIENCE" is totally an English word , but more widely used in India.

We call the white eraser that is used to erase pencil writings , a RUBBER.
What does that mean in the US ??

I am not supporting then.Just that it is okay for them to use it.

 

I read entire thread and these two posts made me instantly smile. As far the dear issue goes never used it and none here used dear for me. So I think people are well aware of using right word at right time.

 

I agree that you may have experienced such kind of words from Indians and Pakistanis but not from all the people out there.The ones who used such words may be unaware of the so called 'Business language'.I strongly feel that this entire 'dear' thing cannot be characterized as Indian or Pakistani way of speaking.

y u guys r generalizing others? not all amricans speak alike not all indians and pakistanis speak alike.
i am indian and i dont use word DEAR so much and most of the indians around me dont use it either.
and ya English is not our first language but every Indian who goes to school learns English and we r not taught wrong way we r taught in British way not in American way.
and its just English is not our first language (for me its my 3rd language)
