Advice needed on buying Myspace resource site $100K+

Discussion in 'General Business' started by SpaceBizdude, Jul 31, 2006.

    Hi,
I am new to the forum and I am interested in buying an established Myspace resource site.
    Questions:
    1. I heard that any site with domain name like "myspacexxxx" or "myxxxspace" will be in trouble is that true?
    2. How stable is the income from such site? The site I am interested claimed making $6,000/day! That is right, $6K everyday.
We have some very decent ideas to take a established resource site to the next level. We are interested in buying part of the site/company so that we can all maximize the success later on.

Please share your experience with us.

If you know or have a site, which would entertain the idea, please let us know also.

    Thanks,

    Spacebizdude

Why would anyone sell you a website generating 6k/day for something even close to 100K?

Thanks, ggt! That is what I meant.

I also meant that we are interested in the site are selling more that $100K.

If any web guru, preferablly in the SF bay area, is interested in the veture or building a myspace resource site together, I would love to talk to him/her.

    Thanks!

It may make 6k now, but it'll die off eventually (just like myspace)

Same can be said about anything online as a general statement. Google might die eventually, no one wants to believe it but there is always something better that comes out as technology advances.

Something to think about is that myspace has been down off and on a lot lately. I know they are moving servers or whatever, but you are gambling with a lot of money.

I would not spend that much money on a myspace site, consider that myspace controls what is put on their site. A) They can bring out their own myspace resources which would make your site useless like they did with online music videos. B) They can block your resources from being put on their site. $100,000 is a lot to spend on a site which you have little control over.

    Thanks for everyone's replies!
First, I don't think myspace will go away soon. It has very strong network affect and switching cost for each individual is high, considering you have a lot of friends’ connections there.
Secondly, myspace will not block other resources, which make myspace so popular and interesting. IMHO, it will be a mistake to try to regulate the site.
Thirdly, as far as I know myspace has yet to monetize its popularity and success. Sooner rather than later, I believe they will figure out a way to become more profitable.
When that happens, all the resource sites will enjoy the ride, at least the leading ones.

I personally am not a web guru, but I am a very enthusiastic and energetic business person. Therefore would love to partner with some of the great techies to ride the huge tide and harvest some of the myspace success.

    Thanks!

The one and only time I actually looked at Myspace I must admit I was not at all impressed. The area I was in had 'crude' banners flashing enough to turn me off right away.

I suggest blazing a new trail. Do something original with a smaller amount of money, and feel proud you're not just "jumping on the train"!

    HI gemini181,
Thanks! I completely agree with you.
I do have some "original" ideas and that is why I want to use a established (at least high traffic site) to launch it.
I am open to any suggestions.
    Thanks!

Sounds fishy! Ask them to present you with proof of income! If it's legitimate, go for it, it's a bargain!

Thanks, stansoft! I will chek it out.

The site seems to use Yahoo ads instead of Google's Adsense.
Why is that? Yahoo pays more?
Can you have both on your site?

    Thanks!

"MySpace" is a Federally Registered trademark. If you have Myspace Portal content on the site, the domain is trademark infringement and they can take the domain and even sue you for damages.

MySpace is taking a pretty aggressive approach against domains with "MySpace" in them since Murdoch bought them. Of course, they will start with the bigger sites to make an example out of them. They have already filed some lawsuits, including agains the owner of "Myfriendbot" who isn't even using "MySpace" in his domain name - but is profiting off the MySpace name. Domain names are much more clear infringement, but even if Myfriendbot wins, they won't get their legal fees back - which will easily be six figures.

You should consult an intellectual property rights attorney before spending a lot of money on a site that is using the MySpace name - especially in a commerical way. Commerical means it generates income, i.e. adsense, products, memberships, banners, even "donations for bandwith" - any type of revenue makes it commercial.

There's a vast difference. Don't expect to make anything near that money with Adsense.

MySpace is pretty much the biggest advertising network in the world now and many people/companies use it purely for that purpose. If you can keep this site you are buying ontop of the rest and have the knowledge and workforce behind you then i'd say go for it.

If myfriendbot is in legal trouble, then maybe all the sites which have myspace content could be served notices one by one? What do you say?

A lot of these myspace resource sites that are for sale have only been up for a couple of months... I don't know about you, but these companies don't have enough revenue history and you never know what could happen in the future. Right when they start figuring out their monthly income, they are selling it for 1.5x+ the yearly amount off of the most recent 3 month average. Most businesses sell off a year or two average and have been in business for a while.

MySpace just started doing the extended 12,16,20 TOP list... which infringed on one of the main generators that resource sites have. Next question... what will they do next to take away the myspace site necessities?
