My company does a little networking as a side offering to our main revenue source. Its not a bad skill to have, but going through all the Cisco stuff would be another story. Entry level people in that field dont make anything, are a dime a dozen and struggle.

Hah - okay buddy, good one. Lets not confuse the word talent like this guy did.

To be good at either programming, OR graphic design you need talent. In fact, you need talent to be exceptionally good at anything. I think this guy is meaning to say that to be a graphic designer, you need a great deal of artistic ability [I think you really need CREATIVITY]. Lets not confuse that wit talent.

...and before you imply that graphic designers are more talented than programmers, take a look at some of the complex applications that exist on the web these days. I guess this guy doesnt understand what is behind some of the apps he probably uses on a daily basis.

Wait?! Are you saying that you don't need creativity being a programmer. Do people really relate creativity to liberal arts only? There's a great deal of creativity involved in programming and I think a lot of times it's more demanding than GD because you can't really ask a stranger if he or she thinks this string of code looks good. There's is such a thing as elegantly solved problem in programming.

Gemeni, if you're more of a math guy and enjoy programming go into programming. If you like creating things in photoshop, various 3D environment generators, etc, go for graphic design. And yes you can learn, the easiest ways is to look at what professionals do and how they do it.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I was a wiz at math through high school (took a pass on college :( ).
Now, I'm drawn towards both graphic design and modifying (not programming) code. I've tried several times to start to learn 'real programming', and I keep going back to "playing with my pixels". :)

I haven't made a final decision on when I'll stop learning "some bits of everything" and focus on mastering something. For now, I'm also enjoying learning about Webmastering.

I started the thread because once I do choose a serious focus, I want to make sure it pays off.

Thanks again to all, you folks are great.

On the programming topic, there's no shortage of bad programming and crappy solutions built by people who don't know any better.

I've been picking up quite a bit of work lately helping people out of jams.
