Answer Question 1: A CMS will help you manage large amounts of content because the site is created dynamically from a database. The content isn't 'static' HTML pages where you would have to edit specific pages. In a CMS content is pulled from the database and placed with the 'system'. The system handles all the output for the site including the look/feel and fuctionality.

Answer Question 2: The best open source CMS -- everyone has their favorites but you should make a decision based on the needs of your site, the scalability of the system, and the support available. A good place to take a test drive for most of the Linux, Apache, PHP systems can be found at OpenSourceCMS.com

I have my favorites and have installed/used most of the good ones -- I personally use PostNuke on alot of my sites in addition to WebSiteBaker. I've installed Joomla/Mambo but don't really like it much.

Hope this helps and good luck in your search.

I've used joomla.. I've seen some nice stuff done with it. But I usually have a generic cms included in all sites I have made for me. Anything I need added can be done with ease.

Someday when i get around to it I'll offer one up on one of my template sites.

I suggest you go to the several cms sites by searching google and sample them. Each person has unique needs and has preferences which arent available in all.

Wordpress or Joomla. Stay away from anything with "nuke" in the name.

Joomla is the best because there are more plug-ins for it than any other CMS. Say you want a photogallery or event calendar, you can literally do it in under 5 minutes.

The deeper you dig, the more you find out most all CMS have 'challenging issues' (including possible extreme server load). IMHO, the hands down winner for beginners, and some other users, is phpwebsite. It offers admins the easy option of making 'form to database' forms.

Can anyone name even one other free CMS which offers an easy way to create form to database apps? Please??

    Nuke NO
    Post Nuke NO
    Joomla Sure don't think so
    Wordpress NO
    Drupal NO
    xoops Sure don't think so

    phpwebsite YES :)
It has some drawbacks (the page maker isn't flexable enough, and modifying is not always easy), but overall phpwebsite is great for beginners, and can make real sites too.

Disclaimer: The 'default' look is not too good, but some of the skins are very good.

Going against everyone in this forum I have to say that Drupal beats Joomla in every respect. I have my websites on Drupal and I can do things easily that are not possible with Joomla, especially if you want yours to look different or have some unique features.

Drupal is the best CMS I've ever experienced. I use it to build new web sites in a day - with content, blogs, forums, and many other features. See the site in my signature.

No offense to Stackman, but, I have yet to see a Drupal Website look like it has been professionally designed. The sites look retro 1998....Almost like they were created by a programmer and not a designer. I'm sure Drupal is good for some things, but, to me if you're going to go the Drupal route you might as well use Wordpress. If you want a professional look and want it to feel like a complete website then go with Joomla.

    Going to agree with factchecker

Alot of people use Drupal but I havent found myself "wow'd" by it.

I would vote for Joomla, the active development and community is second to none IMO.

Is not server load a big issue with both Joomla and Drupal? Don't you find several threads about this at their forums?
