Where is the best place to build a website? (Other than Wordpress). I hear Wordpress is bad for getting high page rankings or am I wrong?

Are you looking for a CMS, or are you looking for somewhere to build and host a free site?

From your question, it's hard to tell what you're looking for. You know that wordpress.com is not the same as wordpress.org, right?

I agree ! Wordpress is very good.
I am using it on my 4 blogs as I feel its best and easy to use.

But if you don't wanna use it then go for Blogger.

Do you mean with free hosting? Or build a site with Free software?

If its free software you mean, I prefer Joomla over wordpress. Joomla's slightly more complex to get into at first but their are thousands of extensions and plugins, along with free templates. Its just about able to handle everything these days!
The wordpress script I've never had trouble getting page rank with. But as with all scripts you have to SEO it and have good content. There's no script out there that will give you good page rank without putting in the work! :)

Blogger is easier to use for newbies than wordpress but it's a good idea to use wordpress from the word go because it is more SEO friendly. But you wont really notice a difference. Also wordpress has an autopinger in it so you may get put down as a ping spammer with wordpress. Thousands of wordpress users are blocked by pingers because they are repeatedly sending pings without knowing it. That's not the case with blogger. But it depends on what you want to do.

wordpress is the best blog provider...i SEO, PR etc.

    wordpress is still the best!!.

but wordpress.com doesn't allow any ads, so if you wanna make an adsense blog, you have to choose blogger.com

    :D

What kind of site are you trying to build? Are you looking for simple blogging? Forums? Profiles?

The solution you choose should fit what you actually want to do. To simply answer with WordPress, or Joomla, or Drupal, etc., won't help you without a better ideal of what you want to accomplish.

There are good, lightweight CMS products I've used like Website Baker which is really a CMS, just scaled down and very easy to use. It's gotten good reviews at opensourcecms.com and my own personal experience with it is also very, very good. Though I haven't personally used them, I have heard very good reviews about CMS Made Simple, Silverstripe and Concrete5.

There are a LOT of options.

For blogs or little websites Wordpress is the best solusion. You can try Joomla or other blog platforms but wp is the best out there.

I think wordpress is exellent but you can try joomla, Drupal or mambo. I have tried wordpress but it is very dificult to move away from the blog look; unless you get a professional. I find joomla, drupal and mambo easier to get what I want.

I could do what I have done with joomla and drupal on wordpress I would definetly go with wordpress.

I don't think Wordpress is bad for getting good Google rankings. It's just as good CMS as any other one (if not better).

I read an interesting post the other day about Wordpress's automatic pinging feature that is built into it.

It went on to say that many wordpress users have been blocked from some pingers for "over pinging".
There are many wordpress users who are oblivious to the fact they they are blocked from pingers for excessive pinging and they don't even realise it. I think you can turn that feature off from within wordpress, and just do it manually instread.
