Adobe Flash o After Effects. Way easier to use something like: http://www.123-banner.com/ that creates simple flash banners and is free.

If you want to avoid flash blockers, there are a few flash to animated gif converters around. Hope this helps.

Depending on how complex it has to be, it's often easier to use flash or a video app and export to animgif. Today Photoshop has animation support (never used) and before it was bundled with ImageReady for simple animations but I think the last time I did an animgif manually has been in 1999. ;)

Really, it depends on what you need. Simpler anims can be done with those free online tools: http://www.online-image-editor.com/index.cfm?fa=wizard&wizard_id=index_animation and, better, http://www.myspacegens.com/handler.php?gen=animatedimage

But you have to save the frames one by one then upload them. For a blinking web 2.0 star + call to action it's okay, something more complex and I would go with a flash generator -then convert to gif if flash blockers are an issue.

Whatever software you choose to use, I'd avoid photoshop like the plague. Its' animating features are pretty un-usable, and will slow you down. Using something like adobe flash is probably your best bet, and there's no need to pay for it if you're just making one thing, seeing as there's a free 30-day trial.

    Thanks.

Agree 100%. Also there's a very unexpensive flash clone -sothink SWFquicker that allows to do everything most people will ever need to do with flash, has a decent interface and is well established.

Funniest thing is, there's an article on Adobe.com that links to quicker as the tool used in a tutorial! That's class on adobe side, isn't it?

macromedia flash and adobe photoshop are best to make banners... if you want to create some good quality logos you should add various plugins available on net which enhance yoour designing capabilities. these plugins are really very helpful.

The plugins available by default are not enough to design good logos..

For animated banners Swish is one of best tools. It is easy to use and have tons of effect. I recommend it for simple animations and banners.
I rarely make gif banners and can’t recommend good program.

I use flash mostly, but you can also use photoshop
Flash is more versatile though and is easier to do animations with

I've been trying to use Gimp 2 to do this. Any comments on Gimp 2 for creating flash banners? Just using it to create the animated .gif then uploading that into a free software to create the banner link. I'm broke and they are both free.

I just got done looking through google for 2 hrs yesterday for free banner software. Now I don't mind the fact that when you look up free you also get the ones that are free trial but what I hate is when you don't find out it's a free trial until you download and look at the read me file. Banner Maker Pro 7.5 to my knowledge is not a free download. It has a free trial but that is not the same. I think it should be manditory that when you look at the google listing that you should be able to see free download or free trial. It should be there on the page so people don't wast hours of time.
