Maybe smart pricing could be the problem, can't quite say.

I know what is going on.
Your main problem here is that you have a low CPC, right?
The CTR could be improved upon, but I'm going to explain how you can get a higher CPC:

in your html source, the 160x600 adsense block is located first, and it displays 4 text ads.
Adsense will display the best paying ads in the first block in the html code.
Your 336x280 block is located second in your html code, so it will receive less paying ads.

Since your 336x280 is the one best located when we look at your page, it should be the first one in the html code, that way you'll have the best paying ads in it and will increase your CPC as well as your eCPM.

Tell me if you don't understand.

yes. it is not always ads with higher cpc, but it's based on the ecpm of each individual ad. it means ads with lower cpc but very high ctr can be put in first positions by adsense, because their overall ecpm is higher.

to know the best ad placement is actually very easy and you don't need anyone to tell you where it is:

    - take a look at your site, imagine it's not yours, imagine there's no adsense.

    - imagine the webmaster of the site offers you to place an ad to your sites, for free, anywhere on the page, where you want, with any size (to choose from adsense's sizes)

    - then you'll know where are the best places to put adsense, because it must be put where you'd put it if it was an ad for your site.
