As I know much ppl want to make communities like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and others. I'll tell you some reasons why to not do it.

    1. Reason
To make a network like Facebook is almost impossible, the chances are 1:100000...

    2. Reason
To make a network like this you need to have more than 1k friends which will tell their friend and they will tell their friends and so on. Also you need to invest BIG MONEY in it...

    3. Reason
If you didn't know, Facebook was made by a deal from governements from all of the world. The reason was because if you do something nasty they can track you without a problem and recognize you. ;)
The leaders of Facebook are C.I.A and FBI, if you don't trust me: READ MORE ABOUT IT ON INTERNET!

That would be it, if you have any questions, comments, suggestions post here. :)

yea, the advertising alone to get initial people, then building and keeping intrest in the site just to keep those people there is insane. you have two monopoly in the game already, chances of you even coming close to being successful with one of these is nil

Of course you're not going to compete with myspace, facebook or twitter... but you don't have to.

If you pick the right niche, your social network can do VERY well.

No everyone has to start some where. and instead of giving up, persist and you will get something out of it.

The web is more interesting when you can build apps that easily interact with your friends and colleagues.

What is the monetary cost of building a social network, even a small one, for a small niche?

    I know, a dumb question.

Social Networks are still popular and people join new social networks each and everyday. I created a couple of social networks in the past 2 years and each one of them has become successful.

If you are going to build a social network the one thing you have to keep in mind is that it is very unlikely that it will be able to get as big as twitter or facebook or myspace. Also when building a social network you have to find something unique that no one else has.

All you need is a dream...twitter has to be the stupidest thing in life. But hey it came around, blew up, and now it's in the likes of Facebook, and Myspace.
However, there have been plenty of type failures. Like Bebo, Tagged, Sconex, Crushspot, etc...which really didn't fail, to say...but it doesn't compete with Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter. So it's all about finding your Niche, having a plan, and sticking with it.

I would think all you would need for starters is a huge dedicated server...depending on what you thought your traffic was going to be like.
That can range from $100-$300 a month.

It had cost me a total of $1,200.00 to start up my smaller social network which currently has over 200,000 active users and over 375,000 user profiles. The money was spent mostly on advertisement because I developed the script myself and the hosting is not that expensive anymore.
