Cost of hosting a site similar to Youtube?

what am i looking at to host a site similar to youtube, hosting about 500+ videos of about 15 minutes each
site will have video comments, blog, user registration, etc.

, what is the monthly cost for this?

A VPS should do it depending on how much traffic you get.

 

a site like youtube would require massive bandwidth and colocation servers. we talking about thousands

you gonna need a dedicated server. if you are on shared server, once you start getting some traffic, site would lot of RAM causing other websites on server load slow. dedicated servers could cost you around 200 to thousands. Make sure you get enough ram on your server.

 

It's going cost you $1000s a month. Video streaming require a lot of bandwidth. You'll need multiple servers.

 

I think if you want to operate it well and make it become more and more popular,you'd better use dedicated hosting.Do you

500+ can mean anything, but like everyone says; this'll cost anywhere from $200 (solid dedicated machine) up to millions of $ when you get big. Grid/cloud hosting is too expensive I wiould think unless you have a solid monetizing plan. If you do, then you can use an EC2/S3/CF setup which allows you to scale as you grow automagically.

 

you can start off with a vps for as low as $20 just to be safe, but your traffic could increase fast and you must be ready to upgrade when it does. It will not cost you thousands anytime soon. A dedicated server for about $100 would definately do the job in the beginning.

??? Seriously the kind of bandwidth youtube uses is millions per month, not thousands. Analysts estimate bandwidth costs alone at about $360M per year.

 

yea, but you guys are missing the point, this guy is looking to host 500 videos or so and will not even get close to youtube's traffic anytime soon

 

That's true...but he doesn't want the massiveness of Youtube. Look at the number of videos youtube has...I would imagine they spend that much a year.
But with 500 or so vids...he could get by with dedicated hosting which will run him about 200-300 a month. And like someone said, if you don't have a good plan, then it will quickly go to waste.

 

You can start very small and scale up as your traffic builds. There's no reason to go out and get a dedicated private server if you only have 30 unique visitors per month.

 

Take it from someone who used to own a few tube sites (case in point, VideoSlacker.com), it is really cheap and can get more expensive.

Better still...find a host that has a autoinstaller for some of the more popular scripts..and you can be up and running in mere minutes..excluding a new domain propagation time..of course.

I really think it comes down to how big your budget is . If you really want a professional-looking youtube clone, try choosing ClipCenter, even though they are abit pricy, i think that what you pay for is what you get.
I like their HD player design, numerous features and especially the Administrator Panel, it's clean and slick and easy to get around.

 

If you mean hosting cost alone then it would ranging from $100 to $200 for US server with unmetered bandwidth.
