Obviously if you are getting people clicking through (that's why it's costing you money) but still no one signing up it simply means that either, your ad gives the prospect traffic false hope and lies, or that the site itself isn't very attractive or there just is not much demand for it.

First of all try out free social networking sites to start generating traffic, don't jump straight to CPC advertising unless you know what your actually doing is something that will succeed. Check out my website for more information at http://www.stevenmale.com/ :)

Use free advertising. Be active in forums related to the topic of your social network. Provide some content or a compelling reason to sign up with your network.

    you did wrong!
First invite your friends to join!
then post some attractive disscussion and then use adwords. So that the people would come they would find something interesting and would join to reply!

I know this from experience: Social networking sites start out v-e-r-y slowly.

You will a slow trickle of members for the first month or two. Those who join won't participate much. You need to keep increasing your member count steadily. Direct email marketing worked wonders for me, as my social network is focused on a particular niche (physics).

Here's an outline of the plan I followed:

    1) Roll-out the website.
    2) Create your user profile.
    3) Create a few dummy profiles.
    4) Invite all your real-world friends to join.
    5) Advertise on existing social networks (facebook, myspace, orkut).
    6) Submit your site to all relevant directories.
    7) Submit your site to google webmaster tools.
    8) Send targeted emails to people likely to join. Do this very judiciously - this can easily be labeled as spam.
    9) Keep your site as active as possible with discussions, messages, comments, etc. Lots of hard work for you the first couple months.
    10) Cultivate people who are active and show an interest in the site. Give them extra authority.
    11) Promote by all means possible.
    12) Rinse and repeat.

Note that I spent no money on advertising.

A typical site takes ~ 6 months to have enough members to become self-sustaining. You need to be patient and diligent those initial 6 months. Remember: hard work does pay off!

    Keep going, and good luck!

always start from your friends, from current social network sites, then go twitter, digg, delicious.

get from little then more and more.

don't expect you will get 20-50k in 1-2 months.

Gotta love it when folks make all sort of suggestions without seeing the site in question.

Can we get a link please?

One thing you can do if send out a survey and ask folks why they're not using the site? Is it too hard? Too easy? Missing features? Why not ask your users what the problem is?

I clicked on the home page link for 'forum' and 'classified'... you want people to join before they see what is going on! ... goodbye! No wonder you failing.
