CTR sucks, need help!

Discussion in 'Placement / Reviews / Examples' started by mikelbeck, Aug 22, 2006.

My CTR really sucks, it's less than 1%. For example, yesterday I had over 1400 impressions but only 2 clicks.

Can somebody have a look at the placement on my site and make some recommendations? Should I mix some ad units in with the search results? Should I use a different size ad? Different color to make it stand out instead of blend?

    Thanks!

The ad's stand out to much from the rest of the site. First thing I would suggest is to make the ad text and your link text the same color so that it blends together.

The ads seem to be fairly relevant to the topic of your site - eBay and auctions. And your blending is good.

I would suspect that you may not be getting visitors who are interested in the topic of your site and who are leaving immediately before they click on ads.

Your topic is a little out of the ordinary and I doubt that there many searches for "misspelled words and eBay." My guess is that you are getting much of your traffic from people who are looking for something related to eBay, but not mispelled words.

Given that you can't change the topic of your site, your best strategy is to somehow try to get more visitors to your site who are interested in your topic. Write articles, use your link in eBay-related formum posts, and get links from other eBay-related sites.

Uh.... no. I would think that the majority of people who get to the site actually use it, as the number of searches performed each day is rather high compared to the number of visitors. For example, on Monday there were 153 unique visitors and nearly 1000 searches.

Perhaps its the content. It may be something that won't really make people click further.

Please try a link unit above navigation and leaderboard above "Save money by finding misppelled misspelled items on eBay!" Just a suggestion.

I'll give that a shot tonight.

I'm assuming I should get rid of the other ad unit when I put the leaderboard up?

See what its like with both ad units on the page, may look bit untidy and might put off visitors, give it a shot.

Ps: I would love to design your site, got alot of potential there and i see you get quite alot of traffic, where do you get your traffic from? Im intrigued. :)

A site like this will be hard to make money UNLESS you have huge amounts of traffic, and or blackhat / trick it

See the site is about a free search for misspelled items on ebay (which is fine)

BUT - when the visitor actually gets to your site, they GET what they are looking for "the seach box "

So the problem is you just need more traffic.

    I know some may dissagree,

What search terms are your visitors using to get to your site? That should give you a clue as to why they are coming to your site.

Ok, I've moved the ad block to up above the h1 tag on each page. I can't use a 728x90 leaderboard, it won't fit. And YPN doesn't have link units, so I can't put those in, either.

    @StrangeLife - PM me a proposal for a design.

@sundaybrew - it's making decent money from the eBay affiliate program, it's just the YPN & Adsense earnings that suck.

@stackman - The top search terms are:
    "misspelled items on ebay"
    "misspelled ebay items"
    "ebay misspelled items"
    "ebay wrong spelling"
    "misspelled items"
    "listed wrong"

    and also...

    "just fishin r h palenske"

How about making a subscription site for ListedWrong Supporters with extra features?

I would suggest that you try Text Link Ads. They wouldn't have to get clicked and you would still get paid. Just google that term for the URL. You have A PR of 5. I would make that site a directory if I were you! Or you could just link to me
