    hey DP!

im looking to start up an eCommerce site but not sure what to use. i have tried Magento earlier but i found the learning curve too great + on shared hosting its slow as hell. im after a strong, reliable, free eCommerce script that i can sell digital products on. All of my products will be for download. i have heard people saying all different recommendations, but i would like some links to the sites and possibly some demos if you are currently running it.

    thanks =)

Try digitalproductdelivery.com, tradebit.com, and you may want to use OSCommerce for selling / ecommerce purposes.

doesnt tradebit take a fee everytime you sell a product? i thought Magento supported digital products? im after somethat that will allow me to do this (if hosted on my server so there is no need for a thirdparty to host the products that is probably preferable)

We've tried many shopping cart solutions and have found that oscommerce is the most best for owner operated business. Fast, easy to add product, installation is easy, mods are straight forward custom scripting is easier than most.

I have to put my vote for wordpress. Maybe I didn't give OScommerce a fair shake, and zen cart really seems to work rather well, but wordpress has a plugin for everything.

The wp shopping cart plugin seemed much easier, it uploaded files and handled all links for me, while zen cart I had to organize them myself.

The download file seems pretty secure to, someone would have to really know what they are doing to be able to get it free, or scam you.

Still working on getting it to look how I want but even the free version seems easy to use.

I can't post live links yet, but if you search for shopping cart within wordpress plug-ins you'll find it.

I use drupal and ubercart. They both work great and are highly flexible. There are also alot of free themes out there in case you dont want to design the site yourself.

I've started a eCommerce site recently with WordPress.
It is quite easy. I post articles, as well as products introduction. Then I use links to re-direct the readers to ebay.
I got money every time people go to ebay via my link and buy things.
It is the easiest way of running a eCommerce site as far as I know.

If you are starting off in ecommerce, you can't go past webasyst.net for a great looking, easy for beginners to use site with the works (almost). For the free account, you can offer 100 products (incl. downloadable), then when you are comfortable you can pay for an account upgrade to sell more products or look for something else as your skills improve. At least their free site gives you an idea of what you want in an ecommerce site if you want to go elsewhere.
Check my sig for an example of the free site with downloadable products. I could make it even better but it works as is.

    Cheers,
    Rowan

I personally love Magento but then I have a VPS from Media Temple. I would be willing to host it for you for a fraction of the cost.
