i think u'd be much better off buying a close than to do it in a cms. there's quite a few clones of ebay or general auction sites out there. check out hotscripts or something

Be careful with this market, there are literally thousands of ebay clones and is generally the first mistake in an online entrepreneurs career. Someone might use the site once but usually they'll end up leaving within a week because no one has bought their item, and even though eBay's charges are RIDICULOUS they have the userbase which drives the sales.

If you do manage to get a site up make sure the design is powerful and sleek, make it fast, and use social networks often to build a close userbase.

I know from a close friend, spent nearly 5,000 getting it built and it crashed and had nearly 10$/month coming in from ad/listing revenue. I think he was upto 10,000 or so hits a month, but no listings. And the ones who did only did so once, and left back to ebay.

First of all, you must be sure that you have to invest money to get auction site like ebay. You must think "Why people choose my site to list item". You have to give more services. You have to advertise a lot. You have to confirm that you pay money to sellers. You have to keep lots of payment options. You have to make charges low. First of all, you have to get a script done like ebay. Once you have done, you have to get it designed by the designers. Then you have to get hosted in dedicated servers, you have to get ssl certificates.

There are many ways to get developed.

I have a sports and sporting goods auction site and forum for sale. The auction site has been up for a little over 5 years and we do have some listings:

    # of open listings 1472
    total # of listings 38664
    # of successful bids 3476
total # of bids placed 10132
    # of registered users 2058

As others have posted above, yes it is difficult to get an auction site rolling down hill. It does take time and money for advertising (and I don't have time or money to spend on advertising right now).

The site that I am offering for sale does have loyal sports card members that do buy and sell, but we are not charging or collecting any fees so the site is not "earning an income" right now. If you're interested, please send me a PM with your offer. I plan to list the website and forum for sale officially here in a few minutes.

    What's the catch?

Well, as was said, it takes time and money to advertise and build traffic (which I do not have right now). There is some residual traffic right now with no advertising - about 400-500 unique visitors per day, but in all honesty you do need to get that traffic way up to peek serious interest from new buyers and sellers.

catch #2, this website and forum is currently running on a dedicated server that I pay $200 a month for and that is starting to bite me. This site could be moved to a cheaper virtual server, but if you get the traffic up, you will want to keep it on a dedicated machine. Let me know if you're interested...

There's lots of ebay copycat scripts out there. If your not looking for something too complex, do a google search.
