Web hosting - everything unlimited?

Discussion in 'General Business' started by clash, Jan 21, 2010.

So, is that really possible? I'm looking all over internet for web hosting and on every plan it sais unlimited space, unlimited bandwith, unlimited domains...
And all this for 50 - 70 $ a year? Can someone please confirm this? It sounds to good to be truth?

PS. Please, don't use this topic to try to sell me something I don't want.
    I want something very reliable.

    Thank You

That is somewhat true. Make sure you read the fine print. Most hosting companies offer this but somewhere in the fine print it has limitations.

For example, I had an hostgator account (unlimited everything) well apparently I had to many files and was over my inode limit so I had to delete some files.

Read the terms of service or ask tech support what the actual limits are. Usually they say in the ToS that they reserve the right to terminate accounts who use an excessive amount of resources but I'm sure the vast majority of users will never reach this threshold.

well, even though you will have unlimited space you won't be able to upload whatever the contents you like. There are many restrictions that you won't be able to upload certain extension of file according to terms of condition etc. So that's no use even if its unlimited which even not true in otherway but just to make their plans look nice and make non-geeks get attracted.

Really its hard to believe that for such cheap rates some company is offering everything unlimited. There must be some restrictions so you have to go through the package details carefully and also take into account the quality of service you get

    I'm OK with all that.
But, if they say unlimited domains, does it means that I can host more blogs if I buy only one hosting plan?
Than I would just have to buy a new domain and start a new blog...

well technology is so advanced these days. The way those sites work is that everyone is paying 1-5$/month for service. Its all shared. So they buy a couple terabyte drives, a high speed internet connection and host everything on there. There is going to be a bunch of people who will never load tons of files or use tons of broadband. Some will load tons of stuff, but they can handle it. Just look at Rapidshare.com the whole thing is financed through premium memberships.

So the service grows and they get more customers they can afford to add on another terabyte every month or so. They can also afford to buy faster speed broadband.

The catch is that they might terminate the big users (people hosting pirated videos, hosting HD videos etc.). Also during peak hours your site could face slowdowns.

Don't plan on hosting the next youtube on there.

Nowadays, all the leading web hosting companies advertuse "Unlimited" parameters, so everyone is forced to do the same!

However, what happens in real life you discover only after you have faced the problem (then you see what your web host will do! In most cases, they offer you to move to a more expensive package).

Don't fall for that unlimited hype. There's no way you could have unlimited everything because the resources themselves are limited. Use some common sense when searching for your web hosting. It could save you some headaches in the end.

best way to find what is your available space on webhosts wich says you have unlimited space is to go into your Fantastico (if you have) and try to install a script, and there you'll see what is your space ;)

most of sites which gives unlimited everything, finish in hands of other owner (they sell it), and then happens - limited.. or they just turn of the site when they get enough money, you always need to check how old is that site

It's somehow true for some web hosting, but sometimes there is still a limit but many people will not reach the limit.

They give you unlimited space and bandwidth, but they limit your CPU and RAM usage and you are not allowed to run something like a file hosting site.
