Ok... I am thinking of doing a SN... but what are some of the Top Dogs in this area. Don't care if they are paid or Open Source (free).

Post them, and is there a site that has reviews for them? Any one that is using one of this have an exist site that is also using IP.Board? (and/or some of there other products)

Let hear'em... pro's and con's, I would like to get my site rolling.

Yeah me too... I am not looking to post at these site... if that's what you are talking about.

OK.. did a little bit of searching for reviews and this is what I came up with.

3.5 of 5 stars: Dzoic Social Networking Software

3.5 of 5 stars: PhpFox - Open Source Social Networking Script

3 of 5 stars: Social Engine - Social Networking Script

3 of 5 stars: Dolphin - Smart Community Builder

2 of 5 stars: BuddyZone - Social networking Script

2 of 5 stars: AlstraSoft E-Friends Social Networking Script

Now I have started to poke around these sites if they have some forums. Price is not a deal breaker, but support is. I don't need it as a backbone system, (testing IP.Content, drupal, and joomla) but I do want the functions of them. Would really like to hear some feed back from someone who has played/used any of these.

Was hoping to get a little better response... wondering if I put this in the wrong area or just that no one has any interests beside me.

well, what you need to be looking for in case of lacking support is an active developer community. Boonex, Dzoic, phpFox all have active communities. These products basically count on their forums for people to assist each other. It actually works pretty well.

What you should also be looking at, is the frequency of updates. Socialengine for example will give their next release for free to the owners of release 3.

This type of tech evolves so fast that you do not want to be stuck with a script that doesn't integrate Facebook connect or twitter, etc. In that area, phpfox seems to be doing quite well.

    Hi Plan>B

What i meant is that if you are going to build a social network, it would be a shame not to use the leverage if succesful networks like facebook. To have an better idea of FB connect, read this:

The Facebook Connect module currently does the task of allowing anyone with a Facebook account to automagically log into your site and retrieve as much information as possible while respecting the users privacy (eg. Date of Birth, About Me, Profile Image etc…). The design of this module syncs your site with Facebook so if the Facebook user is logged out of Facebook they will also be logged out of your site.

The above is taken from www.topcommunitysoftware.com.

By using modules like FB connect, you are making the life of your members a lot easier. The next step is to have the FB pages of your members show updates you have on your site. This mean their friends will see it too, and thats how you become viral ;o)

Our company has several social networking solutions available from a Facebook style SN from www.kootali.com to a more open and community based SN from www.isocial.in and www.rayzz.net

Things to consider when buying the software:

    - Is it a dedicated company or a guy working from his spare room
    - Do they have inhouse technical support
    - How frequent are the updates
    - How does it integrate with the latest technology (like already mentioned; Facebook, Twitter, OpenID etc)
    - How easy is it to customize

Also, a bit of business advice, don't try and start a general 'facebook' style social network, target the niches; church communities, gamer clans, expats, hobbies etc.
