How much do you think bbc.co.uk would make using adsense?

I feel www.bbc.co.uk is one of if not the greatest site in the world, and I am proud to say that as I'm English.

As we know UK taxpayers (inc myself!!!) pay for this site to be run. I honestly feel the bbc.co.uk should show adverts to any one who views the site from outside the UK and limit downloads etc...but thats a different story!

It made me think just how much they could make by using adsense on there site? The amount of uniques a day it must get as well as the totally diverse content added each day... WOW. I think you would be a millionaire in a month...

    Any thoughts?

Its hard to tell because most of their vistors are returning visitors who will likely become used to the ads.

    Yes mate

I think they would make lots. Im English as well, and I beleive we would not have to pay any licensing fees if they were to advertise.

However, as sad as I am to say, all the British institutions (British Rail, British Airways Royal Mail etc) are so far up their rear end, they wouldn't know a good idea if it smacked them in the face...

So as good an idea as it is, I dont think it will happen.

I guess that including Google Adsense will spoil their reputation. and i guess they have a decent chance for not getting approved as a publisher.

The BBC couldn't display ads if it wanted to; it's in their contract. I guess some people would rather have ads, product placement and breaks in programming rather than a licence fee but I'd rather they slimmed down the service a little and put out more high quality programs. When you think what some people pay to watch SKY I think the licence fee is a bargain and well worth supporting

    Cheers,
    BP

PS I suppose a few subtle ads on its website wouldn't do much harm but it's a slippery slope....

Yes maybe for UK license payers. We should show adverts or limit the service for anyone outside of the UK viewing the site!

The BBC already use AdWords though. I've had adverts for "BBC Jam" appear on my educatioal related pages. So, they at least know Google AdSense exists!

Actually, the BBC do a good job on some channels. cBeeBies for example is 12 hours per day children's programs without a single advert. If you've got young kids, it's worth a licence fee just for that! I wouldn't mind seeing ads on the BBC site, but they have a rule of no adverts (except for adverts about how great they are, or for the Radio Times!)

The BBC would never devalue their site by putting crappy paying adsense on it. They would earn 10x as much with proper advertising.

The BBC are currently considering putting ads in it's International version of it's website - source: BBC itself had a questionnaire running a while back. The site would remain free of ads for the license-paying British public. Makes sense to me, they are running commercials on their made-for-out-of-the-UK television stations so why should it not apply to their websites too?

they earn too much money from me paying tv Licsense, when i dont even watch bbc, out of all the free channels the bbc is my least watched channel. any way the would make lots of money from Private ads instead of adsense , then again , i dont think the bbc likes ads very much.

TVLA is full of morons. I'd rather not give them any money. My mate was hounded for a license fee when he doesn't even own a TV. Of course, they always visited when he was at work despite over 50 letters and numerous invites to visit when he's more likely to be at home.

Until great shows like Only Fools And Horses are made again it's not even worth the electricity cost of turning on a TV for 1 second. TV license is over-priced and worthless... well, maybe good as toilet paper, if one ever runs out.

    /end rant
