Self employed, Need advice with insurance

I'm a freelance developer, 20 years of age, living with my family. I stopped going to college a year ago so I'm no longer eligible for my dad's insurance. I visit a doctor every 6 months to check that I'm still alive, other than that I'm perfectly healthy.

Basically I was thinking of getting some emergency room insurance (if it exists) in case I'm in a car accident or something of the sort. I don't need dental insurance so I'm looking for something cheap.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what's available, hoping there's other freelancers here that can recommend something?

If it makes any difference, I live in New York.

I think Liberty Mutual is aggressively going after small businesses and inividuals/families.

Talk to some people in your area to see if they know of any decent brokers.

The health insurance (Highmark) I have is pretty good here in Pittsburgh, Pa. I think it's 5 million coverage and my monthly price went down to $145/month from $179. But as for you in New York, I'd talk to people in your area.

would you happen to know how much it costs, on average?

Thanks, I'll take a look at it.

Does anyone know if there's such a thing as medical insurance only for emergencies?

    It's called hospitalization coverage.

Those policies are sold by the major insurance companies that also sell auto policies.

Your auto insurance will cover medical pay, such as emergency room visits, and subsequent treatment; if you have comprehensive coverage (not just liability). Med pay on auto insurance is a minimum of $1,000 per accident; but check your policy for actual limits. Now, if you fall out of a tree on your family's property, that would be covered under their home owner's insurance. As for other emergency room visit, such as a sudden illness, that would require a separate medical insurance policy.

sorry, I meant car accident in reference to me getting hit by a car, not me driving a car :) . I'm clarifying that because I don't have auto insurance, that's why I need regular medical coverage.

stlgatekeeper, thank you for providing me with the correct name. at least now I know what I'm looking for.

Go back to college dude and finish your education. If you have very little time, take at least a few classes a semester and study part time.
You never know when you are self employed... one day you might find yourself needing a regular job.

I know, I'm going to head back next year (it's too late this year). But until I do that, I still need medical insurance.

any other suggestions? should I call random medical insurance companies and ask for quotes?

Well, in that case, the car owner's insurance would pay for your medical treatment - if they were at fault.

Study up on this. Insurance laws vary from state to state. Everyone needs medical coverage. I suggest you find a low rate, with adequate coverage, and go for it.

You may or may not have to submit blood tests, urinalysis, etc. to get health insurance. Be sure if you smoke, you tell them the truth. If you have a smoking related illness, it will not be covered unless you are paying the rate of coverage for a smoker.

You may or may not be drug tested, as well - a failed drug test could mean a denial of insurance.

    Good luck!

Doesn't NY state have healthy NY and Health plus coverage? I live in NY and i know the state has a few options for independent contractors. Depending on your reported income you might be able to get medical and dental.
