    Try Gather.com

They allows users to post articles, and they aren't too selective about what goes up there. It's not the same kind of Myspace-esque social networking, but you might find that it's a good way to get some promotion.

Start the same way you would go about creating a new pc operating system to replace windows. I think trying to create a network to compete with the big boys(MySpace) is unrealistic without massive capital and resources.

The only other possibility is to create a niche-based network.

MySpace has everyone. Still, Hi5 has mananged to rise up with their 'selective' group of members. Facebook has the college kids. Friendster has still managed to do well competing in the same area as MySpace. A true net force like Yahoo! or Google may have a chance this late in the game.

Hmm - I don't know how loyal MySpace users are. I think Social Networks are reliant purely on users, and if the users are fickle all it takes is something "newer" (which MySpace can never have), free (common ingredient these days) and better.

Actually - someone in this thread mentioned a niche social network. I am trying to capture the MySpace (and all other SN sites) for live poker games. PokerDIY is very new but traffic is increasing slowly - where it is going to win over myspace is that when you make an Event on PokerDIY you can speicfy Blinds structure, Tournament style etc. You can't do this on MySpace...

Hence I think users from these big networks can be persuaded to leave if you can offer them a better, more specific alternative.

This is what I am trying to do with the poker market anyway...
