Do you think social networks killing the value of "Forums"?

Discussion in 'Social Networks' started by jahangir, Jun 6, 2010.

People used to join forums to get in touch with friends & meet new people but social networking sites like Facebook, Orkut and Twitter are killing the forums.

People do not join forums to meet people but they prefer people following/subscribing on social networking site to get in touch.

What do you think about it?

Do you think one day the forums will be just for spammers and the business & discussions we have on forums will be shifted to social networking sites?

I don't join forums to meet people. I do it to gain knowledge on a particular topic and discuss it with other enthusiasts.

Yes I meant to say we join forums to gain knowledge and the more people help us the more friends we make.

Social sites are not taking over forums at all, forums have increased traffic due to the large social sites linking into them or the forums linking into the social sites.....

Forums are not dying, check out neowin and all the japanese forums - they are booming.

I dont see DP going down due to facebook and twitter, because there is no venue for us on facebook to talk about webdevelopment, marketing etc etc

Comparing a forum to a social site is a bad example.

I think certain types of forums may hurt from it. And social networks have made STARTING a forum a little more difficult. But things always keep changing and certain things evolve or die out.
One major benefit to everyone being on certain networks is it provides you with more open IDs like OpenID or Facebook connect, Google Connect and such.
Would be great if more forums let their users authenticate that way IMO.

Forums are not killed, here you find lot more value than Twitter or Facebook. Yeah the landscape is changing somewhat.

Nope i don't think like that, forum still good.
Social site and forum have different purposes.
Social site used to know about friends.
Forum site used to know what someone knowledge, share the knowledge.

I agree with Quiz and Terminator. I definitely join forums to gain info, not to meet people. I use social media networks like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook to meet people. They serve different purposes. Forums are definitely still valuable.

    Heck no!
I think Forums offer a type of anonymous community that will always be indispensable. Look, not all my friends LOVE talking about SEO and Affiliate Marketing... but I can come to Forums where EVERYONE loves to talk about it.

I don't believe forums will ever be replaced.

I thought so too until I went on some Forums on FB. Every other post is someone spamming their crappy website, or fan page :). At least on DP you know it's moderated heavily to ensure quality, plus niche topics are better off the mainstream sites. I really don't want everyone knowing my interests inside my friends network, and that's why anonymity/forums is a great way to do this.

Forums and social networking sites are two different things fulfilling two different needs, forums are still and always be used to discuss different topics with active discussion. Social networking is more about keeping in touch with friends. Forums can get you inputs from everyone and anyone while SN sites are limited to friends only.
