Yes you can easily do all that you mentioned in the joomla CMS - it is very much possible and i do have done work for my clients on this by creating similar to what you have written - and believe me it is the best.

    Hope this helps...

I have just had a wordpress/buddypress website built for me as a social network. The programmers added a few custom/unique features and we have recently got our hands on the finished product. It works really nicely, and does what it does well. If you try and customize it etc, or bend it to do some other things, it can be temperamental, but it still gets my vote. I love wordpress and what they do, and we have got an awesome social network as a result of their efforts and innovations now.

Social networking capabilities, flexibility and future expandability are both very important. If you get a "canned" script that only does "its thing", you are limiting your site's future growth capabilities. Right now, I think Joomla is best for many in those areas. It has ACL capabilities (okay, limited, but 1.6 is supposed to address this, and there are extensions that can override the core and provide you with more granular controls), and a plethora of extensions to choose from, many free or low-cost relative to what you'd pay for one a commercial CMS. Plus, at least IMHO, templating is easy.

BTW, I am keeping an eye on WordPress. I tried WP and BuddyPress on my test server. Unfortunately the rigidity of the system caused me to drop this as a viable option for me. But development is getting very interesting, and I will play with this again in the near future. :)

Boonex's Dolphin product is positioned as free, depending on license
you choose, but it hardly can be used effectively on shared hosting.

There are really bad reviews about Boonex Dolphin.
It gives big problems with many members...
Many complains and Boonex only will solve it when you them pay big $$$

Yes, unpacked it's 33 MB already with ffmepg.exe alone being 8.9 MB,
plus some weird rules on Dolphin forum, but it's "free" stuff. If asked ~
commercial product, I would better offer fork of DLE, but not everyone
is skilled in Russian. Same can be done with DLE and bunch of modules.

Personally, I ended up using Elgg. I tried Wordpress/BuddyPress but just couldn't "get there from here." I have a very limited scope of programming abilities (even in html) but have still been able to fairly extensively customize the Elgg platform to work for my site ( www.viewcaster.net ). Lot of continuing development on some really interesting plug-inc.

Drupal for sure! It offers the most compared to Joomla, Im not familiar with Buddypress.

    Drupal features:
    - Good SEO
    - Flexible environment
    - Can basically anything.

Beside that most (all?) quality modules are free for Drupal but when you use Joomla you have to pay for the most simple modules.

    Just be aware for:
    - SEO
    - Security
    - Module pricing

Definitely check out BuddyPress for Wordpress. It's pretty powerful and I really liked it for the little amount of time that I used it.
