Photoshop alternative

I don't want to invest in the expense and knowledge of photoshop. I just want to be able to use the wand tool to outline a photo and drag-and-drop it onto another photo (background). Is there a program that does this, so that I don't have to purchase Photoshop?

I've heard good things from the software, GIMP. Its free and somewhat similar to Photoshop but with less features. I think that my alternative to Photoshop would be Corel Painshop Pro.

Gimp is great, but complicated for the new user. If you only have a few specific things you want to do, have a look at the other titles recommended above. Personally, paint.net is plenty for me.

Photoshop has a monopoly in their niche. No other competing software would go against Adobe in this stage of development. Gimp is a good drawing tool

If you are not going to do very advanced stuff you can take a look at sumo paint. The great thing is that you can use it in your browser and don't need to download anything. http://www.sumopaint.com/home/

Otherwise I would go for Gimp.
