Name my Next Business - I'll Buy You a Really Nice Dinner

So I tried this before with a business and it worked pretty well and I figured I'd do it again. Here's the basics...if you come up with the name for my next company I'll buy you "dinner" (a $100 gift certificate to the restaurant of your choice). I ended up buying dinner for a guy in the UK the last go-around and it was a lot of fun.

Here are the ground rules:

1. The name must not have any trademarks on it. You can do a U.S. trademark search here.

2. The "*.com" domain name must be available for the business. So if the name you suggested was Google (probably not a good suggestion ) then Google.com would need to be free. You can check this at GoDaddy or any of a number of other places.

Here is the type of company I'm creating:

It's going to be a community and media company focusing on education, instuction and learning. The primary form of media in the early days is going to be video but I want a name that's flexible enough to expand into other forms of media. There is also going to be a social networking-type component of the business and I want some sort of name that implies fun (given that education is often seen as dull and drab by many people). Finally the company should be relatively short (a domain name less than 8 letters long would be ideal) and easy to spell.

Here are a few that I thought of today to give you a sense of where I'm going (but ones that won't work for different reasons):

TeachTube.com - Domain name already gone...too much like YouTube
LearnR.com - Domain name gone...kinda like FlickR but tough to spell
Aprenda.com - Spanish for "learn"...domain name gone
teachez.com - This is pretty good but not quite it...domain name is available
teachmee.com - Again, pretty close but tons of people would leave off the extra "e"

Other things that could be incorporated into a name:

"Virtual" - Since it'll all be online
"Video" - Pigeon-holes us a little but could work as that will be the focus initially...
Latin words - Gives it that sophisticated feel
Anything that has a history connecting with education and learning - Like I love the Library of Alexandria mission (to capture all the world's knowledge in one place) but can't figure out a good name around that

OK, that's all I can think of for now. I'll offer feedback here when so ideas start to roll in.

your business is a firm part of you - like your name, your heart, your family, your love life.
one person one life ..

hence if you want your customers to have fun you need to have fun as well, hence you need to FULLY identify yourself with your own business, you need to actually LOVE your business, your business customers as well and all related activities such as name and name of website.

your business should be as firm a part of you as all other parts should be - and hence the name should reflect your very own inner attitude and love toward your own business.

what do you love most - what do you want to offer to make your business customers to a loved part of your life ...
then look for the one name that contains all - like you have a first beloved daughter and search for a name for her, a name that sounds loving each time you call her
a name for your business should be the very same
a name that makes you smile and happy each time you call your own business
a name that awakes the very same each time your family members, future family members and your own customers alike will love each time they think of you and what you offer or do to them ...

Be wary of checking domain names.
Available domain name are sometimes mysteriously picked up by domain
tasters, if they get a good amount of traffic they keep them.

 

Hmm whats funny is that I sent a pm to this guy and told him of a domain that is availble and it was registered within 1 hour yet no free dinner...

 

Ive seen this same thing done in freelance websites as a pretend project and most of them are scammers....

Hmm wow I never knew that, thanks alot for the info and I will defintely be more careful. What are some good sites to do checks without worrying about that? Is Godaddy okay? Thats whom I normally use.

The only way to be sure is to reg them as you find them, no hanging about.

 

I never do a full domain search. I have done much better on sites that allow partial names and return everything that matches. Then I simply check the list to see if what I really want is available.

For example if I wanted EatAtJoes I would search for eatatj that way the actual name I want is never inputted.

Lately, I've been using whois.domaintools.com and choosing Domain Search from the menu. I like this one as it shows if the domain has been previously registered even if it is currently available.

As to the original post - this was a scam I did get caught in over on SitePoint. Name my company/site and get... There were a few that were honorable, but even one scam makes you forget about the honest ones.
