Usually the status will be changed in 24 hours.Have you submitted the sitemap more than 24 hours?

Which site that you are refering to? UnitedPunjab.co.uk or? The best solution is make a text link and point the url to sitemap. In other word, inter link all your site can get better result.

Personally, i submited the sitemap of my site ( http://www.hoprofit.com/sitemaps/ ) and get good result. Google spider keep on crawling my site and never leave my site( forum ) again.

Are you sure your sitemaps don't have any syntax errors?

Create a small subset of say 10 pages, edit the xml file manually
and check and double check that the fields, dates are correct.

Delete all maps for the site, delete the site wait few days then recreate
the site with a sample sitemap (5-10 pages). Submit it ONCE.

Don't refresh re-submit ever again. Just once.

I rememebr being impatient myself, it only slows the whole process.

They have this propagation/caching algorithm to push your sitemap
to all other DCs, if you start doing it over and over, it might get confused and then you end up in some "incomplete" state on some DCs and your
    account will show "pending" forever.

have u verified your sitemap. if yes resubmit the sitemap.xml file.there must be some prob at that time. as far i know i have submitted around 200 google site maps for my site and i havent faced any single problem. at within 4-6 hours the sitemap is downloaded. so follow each process correctly and i dont think there is any issue in it.
