It may be silliness in regards to getting it under 10K but anything over that is pretty easy using a booster. I did it on sites in the past out of curiousity and had one with no real visitors down to 50K before I disabled it.

The real point is that it is worthless as Alexa rank doesn't actually mean anything unless you are <10k

I have tried several of those "tools", but have never seen any change - even after several weeks. I have 3 different internet connects - DSL, Cable and a T-1 and have tried several techniques across all of them - no joy (again, not that Alexa is meaningful, just in regards to ability to manipulate).

How recently was it that you tried one of the boosters? Perhaps Alexa has updated something?

Not in the last year so maybe you are right...I don't have any motivation to try it again though

Exactly. I don't see what someone is going to gain by boosting their alexa ranking. That's totally meaningless. :D

I tried all sorts of stuff to fake out Alexa (since everyone says it's "easy") last year and never found any tool/service that actually bumped it to any significant degree.

http://www.alexatest.com - been refreshing that page for almost a year now, lol. Check out it's kick ass Alexa rating;)

Well, since Text Link Ads does use Alexa as part of its formula to determine prices, I would suggest that it is NOT totally meaningless. Try similar sites with different Alexa on their calculator -> http://www.text-link-ads.com/link_calculator.php

You would be surprised how many agencies/advertising buyers use Alexa ratings as an indicator of a site's quality and traffic.

My bad. I had no clue that someone other than the site owner was looking at this data. :D

Yes, I remember this experiment also - I had a laptop dedicated to it for a month - NO results.

Everyone keeps telling me it is "easy" also, but no one wishes to prove it.

On any given day I had 5 - 10 PC's in different locations hitting it all day too. I used all the Alexa boost tools as well. The rating did move, just never by any significant degree.

"Faking" an Alexa rating under 10K is not easy - heck - from my limited experience I'd say it's not even possible.

My stats seem the same on alexa.com.

Appears my test never ever changed my stats, so it is NOT easy to fake stats.

Alexa is not a bad source for telling how good your site actually is. AwStats is more reliable.

    Thanks,

    Rob

Now if you could get your site listed under 'Movers & Shakers' then you should get some pretty good traffic from that so it could have a point to fake your ranking in the same sense as using a digg exchange or something like that.

The inherant flaw is that general surfers don't have the bar installed so if your site is not really geared for the techies your rankings will be much higher compared to a site that is even if both sites get the same traffic.

I had my alexa rank down to about 50K because of digg even though I had half the traffic as I do now and I'm sitting at about 140K.

I thought for sure that this spike would get me into the movers and shakers:

however, hasn't come up yet. Perhaps there's a delay, or perhaps the spike wasn't big enough. If I do get in I'll report what sort of traffic comes from the movers and shakers list.

I had a bigger spike from digg and slashdot (got over 800) last year and thought the same thing, but no luck, maybe it can't be a one day thing.
