Can I start a free email website???

Hi all!

Is it possible to offer/start a free email service like hotmail or yahoo???

I want people to be able to signup, pick a username, and have it at my-whatever-domain.com.

I know not many people will use it -- but i have an idea i want to try if it's possible?

Actually pretty easy if you are any good with php, MySQL and basic use of a server. Think of the future though, what happens when your website takes so many users, and they start using your service and then it starts costing you money. Think of a productive way of monetising the website so that it is worth both you and the users while....also what would differentiate you from the competition? Just a few questions for you to think about

It is simple to do but as it becomes a very easy target for spammers to set up and use accounts make sure neither the domain name nor the servers (including the SMTP) are being used by you for anything you consider important as they can easily and quickly be blacklisted for the spam sent by your clients.

 

I was looking into starting a free email site and even went as far as buying a domain and sourced the software but after thinking about it i decided against it mainly as a result of spammer and other illigal uses.

 

I have been re-thinking about this project again,i already have a disposable email site and had been thinking about adding a permanent email facility on the same site using a script that i have located but as with the disposable email site the email is deleted after a specific time duration one would not have the same spamming trouble as with a permenant email.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this one combining both facilities together,i have a big dedicated server not doing a great amount at the moment.Thanks

 

I remember when I had my own email service, (about 7 year ago) I used ZZN. I don't know now but you had an option to put it in you domain.

 

You need to get a private server because of traffic and you should market it with a proper method.

I don't think you can host it at HG shared hosting coz they have certain limit how many email can sent per hour.

it requires a big dedicated server and a good script with a lot of advertising to run it
i too have a temporary email site which i decided to create for providing a antispam tool, but it requires a very less resources

 

Yes you can. But you need to have your own server with high bandwidth and disk space. It is a quiet hard task to do.
