I personally don't think 6 months is long enough to see through a project, I would say 6 months minimum. If it isn't going right then it means you need to change your approach, not necessarily give up.

This is especially try for people new to the industry because the learning curve in itself can take months to learn.

People spend tens of thousands of dollars to go to university for 2-5 years, with no guarantee of a job afterwards. Yet when it comes to putting a small sum into an internet business and sticking it out a year is met with exceptional resistance.

I loved this post, and I think there is a lot of truth in the first post, to be honest. I know someone who thought of quitting a million times during his first year, but didn't because he had heard that no-one gets great results within a year. So he stuck with his project, that seemed really doomed, and guess what? It picked up after slightly over a year, and now he is doing great!

So based on his story, and some other stories I've heard, I tend to agree with the original poster.

One thing you should never do is outsource . Outsourcing might look good in the short term but in the long term it's turning your website into a pile of junk . Also a website must be reusable in order to be good of anything .

How many times have you visited your yahoo or google mail account or youtube ? Thousands of times right ? Now how many times have you visited that website from which you picket up that pizza recipe ?

    See the pattern ?

Haha ! I hope you mean the Honest people are the ones making 5000 per mth and not other way round. cos in yr sentence 100 a month is aligned with Honest people while 5000 a month is aligned with manipulative scammy people :)

Don't agree. Unless you are happy with making peanuts 100 a month, then do not outsource.
If you want to make and grow big, you have to outsource cos there is a limit to how much you as one person can do.
Therein is another important success factor that differentiates the 100 from the 5000 - Recognition that you do not and cannot do everything yourself :)

@chris-tew Couldn't agree with you more man. But what I think separates those who make money from those who don't is TAKING ACTION.

I personally know people who have been doing IM for 7 years and still make just $2k/month and I know guys who made $1million in their fourth year in IM.

It's all about taking action and working hard.

Most noobs who are not making money are looking for a get rich quick scheme....no wonder they call them schemes. :)

In the beginning I had to splatter a lot of stuff on the wall and see what stuck. After many attempts, I only had one site take off and be successful (which is still true to this day). Then, it took about two years of 80 hour weeks before it became something me and my family could live off of. So at first I had to be willing to fail in many directions, and then, be ridiculously persistent when something finally worked (good thing about that workaholism).

Nice qualities, but this sounds like it applies toward people who are developers and not eCommerce site owners. Not putting emphasis on SEO for an eCommerce site will result in failure. Having good content does nothing for being seen (a topic that has been beaten to death on sites like SEOMoz and SEO Book) UNLESS you're an already big name blogger or brand. Having proper keyword saturation, backlinks and all of the other elements in line helps that good content be seen...most specifically, the backlinks.

Rich people or those with dynamite connections can get backlinks easily. Others rely on crappy free directories and begging bloggers for them.

Just like being a restaurant server. It's a combination of quality and turnaround time. Give them what they need in the shortest amount of time and send them on their way.

The ability to learn, desire to succeed and persistence is all that it takes. If you want something enough, and you're willing to learn and work and try new things - you can do anything.

An eCommerce site doesn't need SEO, there are other promotion methods. However, my point with SEO is that once you understand and apply the basics the rest tends to take care of itself. Obviously any online business owner needs a solid understanding of SEO, my point is that you don't need to obsess with it, and often those running a successful business don't obsess about SEO, they obsess about making an awesome product/website, and just have the essentials of SEO in place.

It is very true about the fact that if you just build great content and do nothing else then you won't prosper in Google. Google's 'build it and they will come' advice doesn't quite work very well. Obviously you need the essentials of SEO in place, but the trick of exposing great content is less SEO and more networking, social media, traditional PR etc. Essentially that is kind of SEO as it results in natural authority links - the best type of links to rank higher in Google, but it's not really what you learn about when you study SEO.

Thats true in a way. Better to try out many alternatives and get one clicked rather than putting your heart and soul in just one venture.

SEO still matters because a thousand websites are created daily.
So the "GOOD CONTENT" will be useless for the first few months.

As with business, its best to apply "PLAN-AS-YOU-GO" theory.
This means, that you should not get stuck in planning but
rather ACT on what you want to do.
