How much should I charge advertisers

Tell me. How much would a site-wide ad, relatively large, on a website that gets 1k uniques a day be worth to you if it was exclusive (only one ad space was available).

How much would it be worth for a week? A month?

You tell me, a site about Finance is worth more than a site about Pokemon in terms of ad space.

This is a "how long is a piece of string" question. The nature of the website has a huge bearing on the amount you can charge for advertising - if it's an adult site, for example, the price will be a lot higher compared to a website about knitting.

The ad is large and on top of every page. It is sort of an image gallery that allows people to add their own pictures.

It depends on your site's traffic, PR, usability...

Charge on the basis of number of hits you can give to the advertiser daily.

Hmm maybe 5-10 USD per month assuming worldwide traffic . Not a lot due to the niche . Traffic demographics can make it even worst .

Calculate the use they'd have from it, and see how much the ad space is really worth. Then choose a price close to it, as high as you think they'd accept.

Certainly, price is whatever the market will bear, but this is not yet an efficient market. I would suggest building a price model based on cost per thousand impressions with an adder for click-throughs. That way you are both covered and it is easy to measure success.

Not hard at all to figure out what people will pay, just compare your site to what is selling on buysellads.com

Well, that depends on alot of things like what niche is the site in, how many unique visitors it gets each month, the size and location of the ad, the content of the site itself...

Since you didn't give much details about the site, my opinion is the value of your advertising space can vary anywhere from $50 to thousands of dollars each month.

I would think anything below $50/month is laughable, even though it's only a gallery, ~30,000 UV/month is still a hell of a lot of impressions (I would be asking more than $100, and negotiate down from there, trying to at least cover running costs, with a little extra, so basically traffic costs have the most impact here I would think, unless you have an unmetered port).

I laughed thinking how many people go on adult sites, and how many old people even use a computer.

What to charge is at your sole discretion. Some sites charge $1-$6 cpm, some charge more...charge what they will pay. Fish around a bit, throw some numbers around..figuring out what to charge for ad space is going to be tough the first few times..
