As the name says, you have to be social to gain popularity through social networks like facebook, twitter etc.

    How it helps?
    1. If you have decent number of followers[twitter] friends[facebook], then whatever you post there is seen by many people.
    2. If you post has quality, it will be "liked", re-tweeted by your followers/friends, which attracts even more readers.
    3. It is a backlink.

It is too big to be described in a single reply. But those points should give you a gist of it.

As marketingradiation said you have to be more social as well as professional in these social networking sites now-a-days to get more out of it. Try to do some research on google as mentioned by ForgottenCreature :)
Well except Facebook, Myspace and Twitter, in all other social networking sites you have to submit your article or pages of your site to get more traffic. Also make sure you do some cross bookmarking in these networking sites, which eventually will fetch you a good amount of traffic. BTW Facebook is the only place where you can do some promoting by viral marketing on fan pages of your niche. However you still need to have a group of friends who are real and reliable ;)

...it's all about the backlink. If backlinks weren't provided in social media, online marketers wouldn't bother.

Twitter and Facebook will help in marketing if you use Twitter or Facebook correctly, your tweets must be interesting, unique and you must update them. You can advertise your products and in this case you can promote your business, On the other hand it depends on how many followers you have or how many people like your posts.More followers you have the more chances your site has to get traffic.

if we talk about twitter and facebook, when you have more followers or fans, you can easily introduce what you want to them, so its a good marketing method. But you have to find targeted people as your twitter followers and facebook fans, otherwise you'll just get crap
