Looks like Digg's days are numbered

as a private independent company. There are rumours that one of the big names like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft may snap it up. It might be Yahoo or Microsoft because they need to be seen to be doing something following Google's acqusition of Youtube.

It seems Google got more than they bargained for in buying Youtube. They are having to remove 10,000's of videos from the site.

Google was obviously well aware of the risk. Digg was in talks with NewsCorp (fox news, myspace ect..) apparently.

Here it is: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/30/technology/30youtube.html?ref=business According to the source, Google just removed 30,000 videos (like those belonging to Comedy Central) over the weekend.

The question is, will Youtube be viable if all the professional videos are removed and we are only left with home made stuff? At the moment, I still think its a good buy because the site is so, so popular.

From what i can gather from the thread, google, microsoft and yahoo want digg, and google are removing from content from their own sites?

Interesting... But who could turn down £850million?

I am 99% sure that they dont earn that much on ads from youtube, and it is more of a "show off" tatic than a actual useful site.

I think before when people realised that YouTube didn't have any cash they didn't bother to sue. Now it's owned by Google the lawyers are rubbing their hands with glee.

LOL Agreed but Google gets away with scanning the pages of a book and publishing them online, so if anyone is going to get away with anything it would be Google.

Big business attracts big bucks all the way round whether it be operational, legal or ownership

The wheels start turning when the 'green' is up for grabs, the green dollar rules as always when big business is the focus

I think Youtube was purchased for two reasons: 1) to benefit from advertising on the site; 2) to strengthen Google's brand.

They didn't buy it for the site, they bought it for the userbase.

I thinkIt was a calculated risk. And in the days following the sale the stock price rose so the company gained 3.6 billion in value.. Minue the 1.6 for youtube and they made 2.6 billion..

    Nice buy!!!

Only time will tell but, IMHO most of the "pro" stuff on there was OK(bad quality of the video's) and most of the homemade stuff is crap. I know I won't be visting the site if everything is homemade. Google should of bought Digg and forgot about YouTube.

Actually, if Youtube does not face too much hassle then I think it has far more potential than Digg.

Google bought Youtube for the social network. What they failed to do with Orkut, they achieved it with Youtube.

Now Google can compete directly with MySpace.

IMHO Digg fits perfectly with the vision of Google "Organizing the world's information".

I used Digg search when researching on a topic and i found it extremely useful.

    I see Google buying Digg.

IMHO buying youtube is something like going to the disco/club when the fun time is just about to end and everyone is dunk and ready to go home, but you still paid ridiculous entrance fee. I think they lost a lot of money with this investment even if they got a lot of free publicity.

I see Google buying everything worthwhile. When they have as much cash as they have why bother developing a userbase from scatch?

It wouldn't surprise me if they got bought out. What a dream - getting paid to talk about stuff you find cool, drinking beer that punters have given you for free and then having a large wad of cash offered by the big boys. Landed on their feet there, eh?
