FB just wants more of your personal data and less bad-quality accounts.

Phone verification is most important, since most of the persons are creating more unwanted profiles...

After so much of spamming, this is really a good step in stopping spamming.

It's a way to break spammers, there you can mark one person having 5 more a/c is not it?

I also met this problem. I tried to replace an new phone numbers for my account, it always failed. Then I added another number though this link, it works: https://www.facebook.com/update_security_info.php

Do you not own a phone? You're entitled to one account, most people have one phone, I don't see the problem.

Well, i think the reason behind this is to fight against spammers and chose wisely the accounts that need to be created as the number of hackers is increasing drammaticaly, also to see if one person has more than one account...

They put phone verification for a couple of reasons. 1. To prevent people farming accounts and spamming friend requests and advertisements, which has plagued fb 2. to heighten account security 3. because gmail and a few other big sites have started doing it

They have added this addtional feature just to boost up their security system. FB has been under a lot of heat and this is just one of their precautions. The same thing can be seen with a Google account. I just enter the same number every time and it has no problems for me.
