so it seems to me that barely anyone really makes a living off their website. It's mostly high school students who make websites jsut for fun making a few bucks of extra cash to spend. The ones who actually do make a living are the ones who have an office and have people working for them like google, buy.com, amazon, etc.

my recomendation is to not try to make a living off of the web, as barely anyone else does.

Just in case in your try: Luck is the combination of hard work and timing....unless we're talking scratch off lottery tickets

Good to see I am part of the 10% then :D

Anyone on that's been on DP for a while would know that I make my living off my web sites and also providing a plethora (yes it is spelt correctly!) of services to DP members. It's hard work and not impossible to achieve.

    Col :)

    Says who?

Guys there is too much crap in this thread!

It will take time, but you definately can make a living from working on the web. No, it doesn't involve spamming MFA sites but creating real businesses.

It won't happen overnight, but it will happen if you work for it.

There are many people making good money off of their websites. Just work hard and test to see what works for you

Plenty Of Fish, Perez Hilton, etc are all successful one person owned and run websites. Both owners make a killing.

As stated above, there are plenty of people that are making some good money off of their websites. Time and patience is a virtue. Not to mention motivation. You don't have to have a big office or a lot of employees to make good money on the internet. Much less be a big name.

Its important to remember 'making a living' is a relative term. You have the high school student who makes $150.00 a month, which is better than the $40.00 a month paper route, i.e., about quadrupaling his income without the physical labor. Then you have the college student who is often subsidized by his/her parents who can earn extra cash online -- i.e., makes a living with an extra $400.0 in their pocket. Then you have business owners who support themselves and their families working online. Working online is different than earning money entirely through a websites revenue. And building a business isn't easy or everyone would be doing it. :) As others have said in the thread it takes hard work, time, persistance, good people, organizational, and finance skills.

Make sure you LOVE what you are doing or it becomes a 'job' the only difference is you're not making much money and have all the responsibility. If you love/enjoy and are passionate about what you are doing then no matter if you succeed or fail in earning a living then at least you're doing something you enjoy. But you have to create a plan unless you start at a young age and don't have to earn alot of money in the beginning because it will take you a few years to build your business to a point where it will support you on a full-time basis.

BTW: I saw a great program on Larry King Live last night that might be of interest to entrepreneurs -- it was titled the "The Power of Positive Thoughts" -- see the transcripts here: http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0611/02/lkl.01.html. I can tell you that what they are saying is true -- do you remember hearing about the athletes who use visualization to improve their performance? They talk about things like this and how you can apply it to your business, you love life etc. It might be worth a look.

Good luck to everyone who is starting out on the journey -- don't give up -- and do what you love, the money will follow.

    Regards,

    Vanessa

I rely 80% on the net for my income.. im a designer - however, doesnt mean i earn a good living. I hope to, but atm I am getting by on half the average wage where I live. The town I live in had one of the worst unemployment rates in the state, but it's not deterring me from striving to make a living online. :)

Web site revenue alone can be tough with PPC advertising. I would definitely recommend branching out if you are a services provider.

My income is produced from PPC revenue, hosting services, software and script sales, and a hundred other streams.

Hard word is the key, and a little capital doesn't hurt ;)

If you love it, it's not work, and not hard work either. First we can wipe out the physical "labor" aspect...you can run websites while laying in your bed, or watching TV. So no matter what your doing, it won't be physically hard.

Many things will be mentally challenging, but that's the fun of it. It's a challenge :). I see a lot of it as kind of like a comptuer game, where in the end you just make money. So it's all fun to me.

I'm not making a living yet from this, but I'm a college student with a part time job, and I started running a couple websites a little less than a month ago, and in the first month I've made around $500. And I have a big site coming out soon that I'm very excited for, because I could make big bucks :).

So yeah, you have to work hard...but I would instead call it working long, because the more you put in, the more you will get out.

Some great advice in this thread.

Learning from your mistakes is crucial as with anything in life. A bit of courage is needed too to gamble when you aren't currently seeing any returns.

Shoemoney and Shawn here at DP make money off of their sites. I'm pretty sure even Nintendo may be making a living. :D

It's pretty impressive, if you ask me, and they act like such normal people, when they're giant netrepeneurs in my eyes. :D

Even Shawn's sister, ViciousSummer, makes a decent living off of selling lingerie items on the internet I believe. As much as I would like to see her in lingerie, it's pretty impressive how successful they all are. :)
