These guys have been running this scam for a really long time so they must be making money or they wouldn't bother, right?

Does anyone actuallt know someone who has done this? How many people fall for it?

I'm really curious

they just work their way through the phone book which is really funny when you have two near consecutive numbers and you've hung up on one line and the other rings.

I didn't think older people were online this late at night :p

Back on topic... ohh great, just what we need in addition to the telemarketers. It's become such a joke around dinner time.

I would love to entertain them if I do get a call from them, since when does big corp like MS care about individuals getting infected. Its not even their responsiblility LMAO

Just ask them to "prove it". :) Prove to me that my Mac is infected with a Windows virus. :)

Oh, everyone knows its a scam... I was curious about the other side - it must work some of the time or they wouldn't still be doing it. So how what hit rate do they get? And whats the average "revenue" per hit.

Bit like viagra spam, can't believe its worth the effort.

Just tell them that your computer is not infected with viruses, in fact, you are actually writing the virus and going to send it to pentagon.
I'm sure they will hang up the phone once they hear that.

I guess that depends on what is their modus operandi.
If they get remote access to your computer by making you believe that they are from MS, they can easily install Trojan and steal your financial information.. Big payday for them. Even if they get 1 victim out of 1000 tries.

Some guy put it on YouTube:

----

I record most telemarketer/scam/charity calls and bait them with ridiculous responses for as long as I can.
I get a Windows help line call about once a month. I told the last one all about my Vic-20 and how I can't get it to connect to any BBSs :D

There are plenty of entertaining YouTube telemarketer calls. This guy is a pioneer:
