Digg and StumbleUpon are said to be good sources of traffic. How so?

Obviously, lots of people use those two sites.

but whenever I've submitted to those two, it has resulted in very little traffic at all- while with Yahoo Answers and Reddit I've received lots of traffic for my content.

What might I be doing wrong?

For that you need good followers amount at both Digg and StumbleUpon.
The most difficult thing is finding the targeted followers.

As I understand it not only do you potentially alert users to your content, but each time you create a bookmark, you create a keyword rich link back to your site.

Like someone above me said, you typically need to be a long standing and well respected member of Digg. Stumbleupon is a bit easier but you still have to be established at least a little bit. You can't just open an account, add your site and expect to get tons of traffic.

Start by commenting and voting on other peoples submissions, friend request them, follow them, have them follow you back, submit other newsworthy stories from sites other than your own... and THEN you'll be a respected member who can push his own content (subtly).

Yes you are exactly right mate. As I highlighted no one can get more traffic as soon as registered. So it needs a good amount of followers.
I'll offer you a good option.
Simply follow me at StumbleUpon. I'll follow you back. My stumble upon link is at my signature.

    Hi uleesgold,

i joined su and digg around 2 months back... and the traffic and followers were nill ... but now its rising steadily... i think getting a follower in SU is the most difficult thing... but u need to be more consistent to get followers and traffic from SU and digg.

You can follow me at stumbleupon http://www.stumbleupon.com/stumbler/shanali71/ Follow ME and i will follow u back

These two sites are the giant in their niche. I am also a member of digg and stumble. I am getting a fair amount of traffic from stumble.

It has been said that these two sites will allow your links to be crawled easily by search engines.

Also remember, they like short stuff, and it must either be funny or controversial.
Its not worthed in my opinion if youre running adsense

There are some factors for these famous social bookmarking sites to get traffic from your submitted posts.. Like for DIgg, you need to have lots of connections/followers so more users will see your posts and get to 'digg' it and become your traffic source.

Topic/Story of the submitted link also matters

No doubt both are powerful sites and it also depends upon what you are submitting to them. Not each and every post that you submit from your site can bring you traffic.

Absolutely true. But we need a big followers list to get a big traffic. But most problematic thing is most are not following back even we follow them.

Yeah I agree that these two are the great source of traffic from my experience. One of my sites has a lot of visitors coming from StumbleUpon.

You aren't necessarily doing anything wrong if you don't get much traffic from these sources - it can be a bit hit and miss and it always takes a long time to build a following.

If you are trying to get links to single pages, it probably won't have much effect. Constantly generating content and making sure there is good linkage between them lets each page "feed off" the success of the others and they all add up. If you look at what is top on those sites, you'll see they are generally sites that are creating a lot of good content. You'll need to use other methods to promote your content as well - everything feeds off each other, but the key is good content, lots of it and effective marketing of all kinds.
