Has anyone used social bookmarking sites for promoting their site. If you do, which ones? Also, are they effective?

I've had a few run-ins with Digg which weren't very successful. And when I say that I mean I was the only person who dugg the story! You hear of people around here all the time who've had their server crash due to traffic influxes, so yeah they are effective.

I guess it depends on what you are trying to achieve?

I added all those buttons to one of my sites...havent had much success but with the other site...people added me to their bookmark without me doing anything..so it's really odd..I have since stopped bothering with them. I guess I don't get them :p

Anyhow...stumbleupon seems to work nice for one of my sites...although afaik adsense doesn't like stumbleupon traffic

Yes, why not. If you have good content, people will digg you.

I have tried it and for me it has turned out to be a real goldmine.

It surely is showing good signs. And I think I will have to move to new server in next week or so.

Bcoz now most of the time my sites are down due to server load.

:( When I was not getting traffic it was problem. And now when I am getting it... It is a headache to move all the sites here and there.

I've had no luck with digg either. Stumbleupon works for me though. I think digg generally only works if you have a technical subject, or something that's just hugely relevant to a LOT of people, even if they are nerds. [sorry guys]

StumbleUpon has worked well in a test group I'm running - some of the writers have gotten hundreds to even a few thousand views that way just for one article page submitted.

For some people SU traffic doesn't convert well to ad clicks. For others, it does.... just like with everything, it's not one size fits all. On my own business site, it doesn't convert well. On a music site I run, I get a good increase in ad clicks when I list something in SU. So it will depend on your niche a bit.

In my opinion, these sites shouldn't be targetted to get ad clicks, but for the backlinks to your site gained from the wide exposure. Think linkbait.

I think depending on the category, you get different results on different bookmarking sites.

Another good way it to work with a start page provider. Yes, the big ones such as live.com, google.com etc are unreachable but if you have an RSS feed, I can offer it to my membership base.

I've used Digg, Delicious and Reddit to grow my blog readership from 30 a day to 300 a day, by submitting decent quality blog posts as I make them. Social bookmarkers are a great way of building awareness and getting backlinks - how you go about monetizing the traffic will vary, just as it does with any other source of visitors.

I have had alright success with stumbleupon, but you have to watch as you can also loose alot of money from them. In other words, I have games on my site and instead of the users actually bookmarking or adding my page to their favourites with the game on it, they have gone to the source page and just entered the actual games source file to their favourites.

    Eg. http://domainane.com/game/game1.swf

Now, when people stumble through stumbleupon the actual game that is hosted on my server gets shown and not my site or the ads on my site so I get nothing from it apart from my bandwidth gets used, so that is a big loss. So I guess sometimes using these can actually cost you money than get you money.

I have used hotlinking protection on my site, but it doesn't work in all browsers. IE for example.

I have noticed that quite a few games source code are being added to stumbleupon users profile.
