Hosting a site on 2 servers

Lately i have all kinds of problems with my hosting (server down, mysql not working,etc) .I was wondering if i could have 2 servers where i can host my sites and setup DNS so that when a server is down the other could take over .Can this be done ?

co-locating is certainly possible - although that might be overkill as a solution.

The key thing is to find out "why" the server is crashing.

Is the site traffic too much for the server to cope with?

Can you upgrade the server?

Is the server set up badly and just needs optimising?

Would a load-ballanced server be a solution?

 

Unless you have a huge amount of traffic then i don't think its worth it.

 

if the server is going down due to too many mysql connections.. try optimizing your queries

I dont have a huge amount of traffic ; i seek a solution for a small/medium site. I was wondering if having 2 separate hosting accounts on 2 different servers and setting one as main and the other as secondary on domain CP is possible.

 

What you need is a loadbalancer, ask your host for a specific offer.

Define "huge amount of traffic".

Frankly, if the site is small and the server is crashing - then either the website design is seriously flawed, or there is a problem with the server (either config or capacity).

Are you using a dedicated server - or shared?

 

cellularnews, my traffic is no more than 10,000 uniques/month and i have a reseller account on a shared server.A week ago i changed my hosting company and in a week i already had 2 downtimes with the new hosting , lasting more than 10 hours each.

 

The best solution if you are having trouble with your hosting service would be to change to a better hosting network and have their nameserver as your primary DNS and if you need to have a second hosting service then place their nameserver in the secondary DNS server.
If the hosting is down for the primary the browser will send a request to the secondary server.. I read this somewhere a long time back.

The best answer maybe provided by Shawn or any other webmaster handling huge websites in this matter

what the OP actually wants to do is to utilize two different hosting companies - so if 1 of them is down - the users are automatically redirected to the other one.

 

10,000 uniques per month wouldn't crash a Sinclair Spectrum - let alone a modern webserver.

For the cost of two hosting accounts, you should switch to a decent single host - and if possible a dedicated server.

I am sure there are lots of recomendations for reliable hosting available, as it sounds like you are just unlucky at the moment.

I repeat - for 10,000 unique sessions per month you should not need a dual server platform.
