Why No Support for SOPA Strike by DP?

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by spiritfly, Jan 18, 2012.

I was searching for DigitalPoint about SOPA and all I found was a few posts with so little info and replies.

No news, no feedback no official support by Digital Point?

I considered DP to be the place where I could get updated about the situation first, but it seems that no one here cares.

I mean, I have censored all of my websites and I'm not even from the US.

I would really like to hear DP members opinion on this matter, and why no one writes anything about it, it seems like nobody here cares when in fact you are the ones that would be affected first if the SOPA gets passed!

And the fact that no one even answered this thread just proves that no one really cares around here..

Very irresponsible from DP, totally disappointing.. :(

I'm somewhat divided. Obviously, it's against piracy. It's being promoted because US citizens are having property stolen, from webmasters in countries that don't care. It's a way of combating that issue. I may be wrong, but I think companies such as Google are hyping it up to a higher degree, to get everyone protesting, but not totally for "freedom of speech" as they say...I think the real concern is the increased workload, like, having to deindex so many sites. But again, that's just my own personal opinion. I don't think it will pass, and I don't really want it to. However, they do need to address this problem, but I would like them to do it in a way that won't adversely effect sites like Google, DP...

The only way I can see it is that they didn't want to impede access for members closing deals, or keep members from having a place to discuss the blackout and tactics (which obviously didn't happen. I saw very few threads about SOPA besides the one I made to give people a quick 3-5min SEO-Safe method of blacking out their sites).

That said; I don't know why they didn't make SOME sort of statement. Something that could be bypassed by clicking on a link...

I completely blacked out and refused access to over 200 domains of mine, losing a good amount of money in the process. I think I've had them blacked out since 10pm CST on the 17th, and I still haven't lifted the blackout. I may let it run until 10pm tonight or tomorrow night.

I thought DP could have participated as well. Here is a list of other major sites that took part in SOPA blackout with screenshots of their homepages.

It won't pass right now. But I do think they will alter it somewhat, come at it from a different angle, eventually, one in which Google and Facebook can support. Here are the statements from the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee:

IMO, I don't actually feel that piracy is freedom of speech, as has been alluded to by some against this. But I think the bill would have created too many problems in the way in which it would have been applied.
