In an amazing display of abject ignorance, you have once again demonstrated in a public forum how out of touch you are with simple facts.
It was Egyptian students who with petitions on university campuses, who got the whole freedom movement going. It started off as a pen and paper revolution.
Give it up man, your argument is going nowhere but to the trashbin of misinformation.

Apple is rich enough to pull out of China, build their own factories here in the U.S. and give their workers a decent salary and working conditions. They are rich enough to do it in China too, if you want to save the jobs for the Chinese. But they haven't done that. Apple needs to do it.

The other issue is that Apple can do inspections and such, but ultimately the factories are not theirs... nor are the employees theirs. If you have Foxconn (or any other suppliers) hiding certain things from Apple (which no doubt they are), it's tough for Apple to even try to police.

Also, you do hear about the bad stuff going on to employees of Foxconn, but you also have to remember they have over 1,000,000 employees. So percentage-wise, the incidents could be quite small. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the same percentage of employees are injured somehow or commit suicide while working at Facebook or Google or any other company.

Do I think their work conditions could be better? Of course I do... and I think Apple can put some pressure on them to improve working conditions, but any *real* change is going to have to come from the Chinese government. Expecting Apple be able to regulate a company with 1,000,000+ employees that aren't even in the US is a bit of a lofty expectation. Foxconn would have to WANT Apple to regulate them first of all (if they don't want Apple to regulate/watch over them, they aren't going to tell them any of the bad stuff that happens inside the company). To compare, 14 suicides were reported in 2010 out of 1M employees. Google has 32k employees and Apple has 60k employees... so if even ONE committed suicide, their suicide rate is higher.

Again... I think their working conditions can improve, and hopefully they do... but I also remember reading awhile back how Foxconn takes care of it's employees and have built entire communities for their workers. Workers can live in company supplied housing if they have no home (or like most, travel to the city for work), they have employee only grocery stores, banks, restaurants, etc, etc. At one factory they brought in something crazy like 80 hogs every Friday and actually slaughtered them on-site to feed all the workers. I certainly don't think they have 1,000,000 employees shackled to the assembly line like some would like to portray it. Was actually pretty interesting to read about all the stuff they have to do to actually manage 1M+ employees when it comes to even simple things like feeding them.

In the grand scheme of things, Apple is nothing more than a customer for Foxconn... Acer, Cisco, Amazon, HP, IBM, Dell, Nokia, Samsung, Sony, Microsoft, Intel, Motorola, etc, etc. are also customers.

    @Shawn

    Will you support this?! :)

This is different than the Change.org petition, but is a wonderful idea. Please read this, and pass it on:

Sign the petition to Apple: Make the iPhone5 Ethically

"The quality of working conditions matters as much as the quality of your products. Make the iPhone 5 and your other products ethically."

:)Yes, I agree. I think it's very realistic.

But, I believe both petitions are. Do you remember the story about Jobs suddenly deciding he wanted a scratch proof screen? It wasn't debatable. He told the suppliers to do it, and they had six weeks to make it perfect. Apple just needs to have that uncompromising passion, when it comes to protecting workers. It has to be a high priority. Up until now, I just don't feel it has been.

Anyway, going forward, there is definitely a market for the Ethical iPhone. I hope Apple takes this as an opportunity, as the demand seems to be there.

Bingo , for some reason since the disband of the URSS and the fall of the eastern block people think that communism is gone and everyone is nice and happy . They forget that China is still the same brutal regime and has no regards when it comes to butchering millions of it owns citizens . The solution here is simple , try to not buy from China , there are a lot of alternatives , use those .

I would love to see a report on the working conditions in the fake electronics factories, that is where you see the real harsh working conditions, child labour and pumping toxic waste into nearby rivers.

Apple is only being singled out because they are a foreign company in China, Wonder why there isn't any reports on working conditions in the Huawei factory.

Selling to the Chinese is key for Apple, they need to stay competitive against the local brands... its not a easy job !
