Why clone myspace?

I have seen several posts for people wanting to clone myspace.
I would think a better model would be to "piggy back" on myspace and get the users to use your site as an "accessory" to the site - like all the pimpspace sites out there.
So what do all the myspace users "need"?

 

Well, unless you are a large media company it would be impossible to compete but the myspace phenomenon is the tip of the iceberg.
A large media company with millions of patrons (customers, listeners, viewers etc) could challenge myspace. It's all about getting people with similar interests together.

 

molluzzo, I agree, unless you have an AMAZING idea, and most likely deep pockets, there's no competing with myspace. Until then, there are still millions to be made catering to myspace users.

 

I don't think cloning myspace would be successful unless you really have deep-pockets but getting the concept and replicating in a niche market might help. Being a market follower is not usually the path to success.

 

no true. all you need is a gimmick, myspace has alot of stuff that people want but they dont add.

 

no one is even going to come close to myspace

they have a big established website / company and the viral effect will take years for someone to catch up

word of mouth is big amongst the musician and teenage community and its still going to be the rave for years to come.

other solid companies have tried to copy them without success. I guess its a matter of time before someone comes up with a marketing speil to blow them out of the water. but they are still the domanant players in this field.

 

I think some people are getting ahead of themselves. It almost sounds like people believe MySpace started out right from the start with Deep Pockets and a Media Company behind them... sure, they had investors earlier than Fox - but NOT from the start.

All you need are things people want and alot of persistence plus a little luck. Sure, other site may start out with deep pockets but NOT every big site. Ahem: Google.

 

Yes, if you create a gimmick or add things that myspace does not have, you are effectively not cloning them. Cloning basically means offering exactly the same as what MySpace is offering.

 

then that is common sense and a really big waste of time to do

 

well, you see you always need a lot of clones..then people will get sick of my space...and then some smart genius will start a new trend...

 

clones can just target small niche section, it will never go as huge as myspace.

buit yet can generate small revenue which a webmaster mite be happy with.

 

I think a niche based myspace clone is awesome -- but it will never be as big as myspace -- but bigger isnt always better....
