Hi I am looking to start a community ads site for my local area but think that a forum might be a better way of doing it. What do people think? also I see that there alot of forums out there and reading a few other post in DP that most aren't great! Should I stick to an actual classified script?

Looking forward to hearing from you and thanks in advance for your help:confused:

If you want to get a lot of traffic, I would recommend forums because it is the best source traffic.. You can also do some classified ads but you have to prioritize forum.

A forum will generate more traffic because people can interact on it. They'll return to the site multiple times to see if anyone has responded to what they have to say.

However, for classified ads - are you planning on charging people to post ads? Then a forum isn't the right tactic to use, because you won't really have any way to manage that without a lot of moderation. If you're planning on letting people post their ads for free and monetizing based on advertising, a forum would serve you well.

I would only do a classifieds script.

Only people into forums will be involved. You are setting a taste limit.

First decide what exactly you want forum or classified site?

If you want to traffic towards your site, then forums are ideal.

The problem with forums is that only source of income comes is through advertisement.

If you want to make money, then classified sites are much better since you can get better commission on product sold/bought from your site as compared with forums.

Consider this: your post is here, in this forum.
It means you have what you need, forums are a great place to use.

Yeah, A Classifieds Site is where people post classifieds ads about they wanted to buy & sell & you can earn more revenue from the classifieds site by placing the ads. And I would suggest AJ Classifieds which is the best classifieds script software to create classifieds site & return more revenue from the site.

I think classifieds is easy to get listings, but forum is hard to get users posting.
We have classifieds and forum. Forum takes more time to maintain.

From my experience it's better to use forum platforms like Vanilla, phpBB, etc

I agree with this. You can use phpBB or Vanilla. Of the two phpBB is better. I would love to suggest vBulletin but it will pinched your pockets.
