I havn't had any experience with Handshakes but i personally like Social Engine although it is expensive compared with the other two, PhpFox has some flaws and updates are a lot less frequent than Social Engine, PhpFox does have more features built in but Social Engine has a huge amount of plugins available both free and commercial. I have seen relatively large sites running on both so i'd say it's down to personal preference.

Im not certain on how resource intensive the two are and how they compare, i also don't think that SE has a video plugin yet although i think that it is planned, PhpFox is great at handling video though.

Are you asking a genuine question?

Because I see social network related (handshakes?) link in your signature. Why don't use it?

Bad thing about Social Engine is is that they might look cheap, but they are not!
If you buy the basic license for $249, then you still have nothing (no blog, no photo album, etc.).
You need to buy extra modules for even the most simple (but essential) things.
Every single module is $40 - $50 so the total costs are about $580,00!!!

Then you get started with a simple social network.
If you want to extend with more options, there are new mods to buy for between $15 - $150 each!!

I calculate when i should start a social network with this script, i have to pay abou $980,00 (with the modifications that i prefer).
Thats retail price, because Social Engine does NOT allow you to buy a second hands license.
If someone offer you to buy his/her license, thats NOT allowed!
You have to buy your own NEW license at the Social Engine webshop.

Yes, i know... thats stupid and it sucks!!!!
But i have to say, if you looking for a long term not a *bling*-*bling* quality script (like phpfox), then you can buy Social Engine.

I am looking towards setting up a professional networking site integrating newer features. Building the platform myself or outsourcing it would either be costing heavy time or money. Alternatively, if i had to choose a social software, which would be the best option? My expectations with the software are

    1. Highly Customizable to be able to make any changes to it with my development team.
    2. Well documented
    3. Highly secure
    4. 100% Source Code availablity with no encryption

What are your opinions about Social Engine and PHPFOX?

There are only just a few good social networking scripts around.
Actually 3 well known and solid, they exist for many years already and have good support too and private forums.

phpFox - http://www.phpfox.com (the best of the 3)

    Social Engine - http://www.socialengine.net

Jomsocial - http://www.jomsocial.com (this is a Joomla component, Joomla itself is free)
