Have you ever had a friendship that was toxic?

I had a writing contest on my forum and the person that won the contest wrote about this subject. It gave me chills because I've had many toxic friendships and didn't even know it.

Ya I've had a couple of toxic friendships early on in my life. They were friends that I grew up with all through middle school. I, like most never realized how much of a drag they were on me. When you get to a point where you look at yourself and decide on the kind of person you want to be, you start taking a look at what is holding you back, bad habits, friends & material objects and start removing them for your life. The best thing to do is replace them with something or someone that is a positive influence on you or wants to help you succeed.

A toxic relationship, as I see it, is when one or both parties bust each other boundaries and have a tendency towards stocking. I've seen people relating to each other as if they are stocking each other on a daily basis, and they call it love. Love will respect other person's boundaries. Without mutual respect there's no love or strong relationship.

We are taught that to be a good friend, a loyal friend, a lifelong friend is one of the most admirable qualities one could have. And the longer the friendship has existed, the more valuable it seems. And yes, it is very comforting to have ties to people who have knew you “way back when.”
It gives our ultra mobile and modern lives a bit of consistency to have the thread of a good friend that has known us through high school perms, journeys off to college, and life-changing moments like marriage or the birth of children. It’s nice to have someone to say “Remember when….?” to.
All long-term friendships are bound to go through ups and downs, I believe. People that drift from your life can drift right back into your life after a few months or even years of distraction.
And sometimes circumstances allow those friendships to be re-kindled after re-connecting and spending time with one another again...
Saying goodbye to a toxic person frees us to nurture so many other beautiful and healthy relationships.:)

"A friendship is between two peers," says Florence Isaacs, author of Toxic Friends/True Friends. "There has to be balance in a friendship for it to be healthy -- not one person whose needs get met and another whose needs are overlooked."
