Lesson to learn: don't bank in offshore countries whose primary income is from money-laundering?

Many Russians who are involved in nefarious dealings (money laundering) have their money in Cypriot banks. You don't mess with the Russians. I think some Cypriot bankers and politicians will soon be having unfortunate *accidents* in the very near future.

That is remarkable, but it just goes to show how little safety we all have. Sorry to hear of this.

I have to somewhat agree. It is most definitely a form of oppression.
In America you can get the book thrown at you and even go to prison for tax invasion.
But before any action is being taken, you can hire a lawyer and most of all continue doing business being able to pay your employees and work on getting your numbers straight ... and then settle the case with a certain amount of negotiating a deal.
Money can get you out of the problem, because money is what has gotten you into the problem to begin with.

That way everyone will win in the end.

In Europe it looks less like settling things, but more like retribution.

Successful people often get completely destroyed with no chance left to recover.

It is that reason that Google, Microsoft, EBay, Amazon will only exist in the United States.

In Europe they would have all been forced into mediocrity a long time ago

This mess really began when Greece defaulted on it's loans leaving Cypriot banks holding the bag. Anyway now companies in Cyprus are leaving in droves and are going to the Caribbean nations to deposit funds.
If Cyprus is allowed to continue down this road and not reverse, other nations will follow suit making an even bigger mess.

Yape I do agree with you.
CNBC's Jim Cramer already said Slovenia will likely grab lead-lines as the next euro zone country to seek an international vailout, given the fragile state of its banking sector. Following the Cyprus bailout, Slovenia's dollar bonds have dropped by nine points over the past two weeks as investor's worry about the Balkan country's troubled banking sector and the government's ability to tap the international capital markets.

Wow. I didn't think it was that bad. I wish you all the best with your business, to which this surely was a tough blow. Just don't let it kill your entrepreneurial spirit.

Not only that, but why should we think it is $ and not some other currency? :)

If it is Cypriot pound it is probably worth a bit more than if it were USD.
