Why is this ad block showing on the left of my screen?

When I visit certain sites, this sidebar comes from the side full of ads and I'm confused as to why. Does anybody know where it's coming from? Any help would be appreciated.

 

You can block these elements via tools like AdBlock Plus. Or you can disable JavaScript (I use NoScript to do that), which is probably the best way to get rid of any ads.

 

devtard, if you go to enlightenlists.com, do you see an ad on the left that comes from the side? i dont know if its coming from my site or not. i am so confused because i didnt implement it on my site. i know about ad blocker, but i want to make sure my visitors wont be seeing it in the future. thank you for the reply.

 

I don't see anything (I displayed it in a browser where JS was allowed).

 

You may also want to check if you have accidentally download something (a virus) that displays ads from your browser, rather than it is just certain sites that display them.

then it sis coming from my laptop. do you have any idea where its coming from and how to delete it, so i dont have to install an ad blocker? it has to be coming from some sort of software or something, right?

 

i mean i have a mac, so im assuming it isnt a virus. i just tried downloading the avira software but it doesnt seem to be downloading correctly.

 

Mac is just as vulnerable to viruses as probably any other computer anymore. Avira has it for a mac too:

The last time Mac computers were not targeted was back in the early 2000's. They are being hammered now with a vengeance.

 

damn i didnt know that. just started downloading that antivirus software. thanks for the help guys. will this software get rid of it, or are there more steps to take after i install it?

 

I am not sure about Mac, but I think, after the download and installation, it will ask you if you would want the software to scan your computer. Say yes to it. It may take up to 30 minutes for it to scan it, but it's worthwhile, so be patient. It may find all kinds of junk on your comp. that you were not even aware of.

Have you tried more than one browser to ensure it's not a dodgy extension? Also, you should check your DNS hasn't been amended to other servers, or the proxy settings for your browser. (A couple of other ways that could be used to cause what you're experiencing, without going into technical details.)

There aren't actually many viruses out there for OS X and most of those are trojans (i.e. require user interaction for the system to get infected) rather than ones that can infect without user interaction. This is due to OS X being built around *BSD. A common theme for UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems. So, whilst OS X is not immune, it's not as bad as some vendors want to make users think.

it appears to be an extension of safari, because it doesnt show in firefox on my laptop. i clicked the button towards the top of the ad to see if it takes me somewhere, and it is from "topic torch". i did a google search on it but i couldnt find how to get rid of it on a mac.

 

i finally got rid of it. i am an idiot.

it was an extension on safari called topic torch, but the company was yontoo i believe, which is why i didnt see it under "extensions" when i went to preferences. thanks everyone for the help. id leave some positive feedback or whatever but i dont see where to do that on this forum. thanks again.
