Kindly define "web content" and "affordable", as they apply to your project.

I just spoke to him and he pays $.80 per 100 words and doesn't guarantee payment for the uniquely written sample he wants first. So most native writers probably won't be interested in this offer. Hope this helps. : )

The reason I try and price my writing services 'competitively yet conscientiously' is to weed out tire kickers, double outsourcing agents (you know, the ones that were hired at $1.50/100 then turn around, hire you or me at $.80/100 and never touch a word) and those who'll spin my words into something they're not. I'm not against helping someone, yet I can usually tell one's business modus operandi within 2-3 private messages - the reason why I choose my clientele wisely.

    Thanks for the heads up...

Not easy to choose clientele wisely.

However, there is a growing trend here for writers to stop accepting too low fees (basically anything below 1c per word and/or with added extras like posting/photos etc. which are VA duties rather than writing duties).

I can understand buyers struggling to pay more than 1c per word for writing though. The average web site doesn't make much more than $10 per 1,000 visitors, so even a site with 10,000 monthly visitors may only make $100-200. Buying several 500-1000 word pieces weekly to feed the Google monster will run over $100 a month even at only 1c per word. That's before paying for an editor, content poster, outside link building, software, domains, hosting, etc.

Not a huge number of sites get much more than 10k visitors a month and Google's updates increasingly blast once successful sites completely out of the water, so turning a profit cannot be as easy as people think. Therefore, writers can turn their nose up at rates of 1-2c per word and charge 4c per word instead, but the economic reality is that there are only a small percentage of live sites that can afford that high rate and those sites will need to have hundreds of thousands of monthly visitors to have the cash-flow to do so. I don't know that the frequent posters complaining about a lack of 4c per word rate orders actually get web site economics for site owners. Two sides to that coin...

Well what do they expect to make when they continue to fill their site with content that cost them peanuts?

These people keep complaining that they're not making any money to be able to afford to pay those high rate prices, but they continue to fill their site with cheap content in the hopes that it will make them money. Oh well, they'll stay stuck in that never ending cycle until they get a clue or they give up, it's the circle of IM.

Not necessarily. You're assuming that only content written for 4c per word is any good.

My writing is sold by The Content Authority for 2c per word, elsewhere I've sold my own writing anywhere from 1c to 5c per word. I'm the same person writing the content and I'm a native speaker.

I have clients that simply cannot afford to pay 4c per word. Their budget doesn't run that high. There is just too little work out there to hold out only for high paying clients. So I have a mixture of rates and I try to accommodate the needs of the client where possible. Often clients can grow with you and as their site begins to do well, they can up the rate to something better. But if you won't work with them on their budget, then you never get to that stage.

So it's far too sweeping a statement to relegate all lower-priced content as trash. That's simply not the case. It's a simplistic idea thought of by people who only charge 4c per word and up. And it's incorrect.

    Respectfully,
    WW

    You're assuming that only

...but it's an accurate account of the 70% (or better) of websites around today.

Simply put, the adage 'you get what you pay for' is starting to hold true within all areas of web content. 'The expectation t-bone steaks when you only paid for turkey burgers' sums up the better part of content-driven business blogs, landing pages and email campaigns today.

If that gentleman's statement was too 'sweeping', I doubt many would last on Elance, oDesk and Freelancer (where $.001 per word isn't uncommon) as long as they have. People pay for undereducated junk, and wonder why they've never made much off their business - it's sad, but true. Those same businesses that haven't enacted content planning procedures - including use of LSI - and just slap random content across their blogs won't play in the 'big kids park' for long.

Wise investments have always, and will always, deter unwise providers.

Again, that being said, I can do $.01 per word like a champ, 24/7. If I'm offered more, I'll definitely oblige. Because, as many are finding out, somebody will perform the content work for less, and lure unsuspecting businesses into a world of crappy content.

I'm getting in where I fit in; at nearly 40 years old, I'm quite seasoned and can survive financial slumps like Bear Grylls does the wilderness. My kids love me for my efforts, and get the things they want still. No shame here...

    Hey Aboutfreelance,

Don't get me wrong, I like Corey. We have spoken privately on other matters and he's a decent guy.

I will say this. I have had clients pay 3c per word and others at half of that. If the 1.5c client is easy to deal with and the niche is not too challenging, then that can go very smoothly. However, the 3c per word client will usually expect an extremely high quality level, unrealistically so in some cases. Possibly expect one or more rewrites and often require a lot more negotiation & hand-holding over Skype which can eat a lot of time. I have had a number of occasions where I fooled myself into thinking I was better off at the 3c level, but when I analysed how my time and money flowed, I was actually doing better at the cheaper price point. Go figure!

Therefore, even when it seemed like I was earning twice as much, I actually wasn't. I was only fooling myself, convinced I was making more per hour. That actually wasn't the case. Yes, it's true that people can expect too much for too little money (way of the world) and it is fair to say that quality levels ratchet up and down depending on the budget. But that doesn't mean cheaper content is low quality, though it obviously helps when you can give additional time to research, write, rewrite and polish a piece before submitting it. Often I ended up writing higher quality content, for a higher price, but made no more money per hour as at the higher price, much more was expected. The process of pricing and income with freelance writing isn't as linear and straight line as many people like to think.

Lastly, it's also worth pointing out that freelance writing for the web isn't Shakespeare here. We're not writing the Great American Novel either. But some writers have a tendency to think like it is something that it's not. If the content is written well and serves the needed purpose, job done. Don't over think it.

You've not obviously written 20 years worth of content as I have. The process of pricing and income is as simplistic as you wish; what makes it difficult is lacking the proper level of freelancing decorum. Knowing what you want, knowing who'll give you 'x' for 'y' and taking what's given when times are hard takes an equal mix of experience and tact.

Let that mortgage or 4 year old child stare you in the eyes just once: you'll pick .01 per word, for 15 hours a day, quickly. Not sure if you're in, or outside Bangkok; big city living is as expensive as rural dwellings anymore. You take what the good Lord gives you. And that, my friend, summarizes the lives of freelancers that don't feel like starving.

Well exactly; that is why I said I work for different rates rather than a single rate. Each client has different needs.

And I do commend you for such. I'm always keeping my expectations of pay off the table at all times - clients needs come first to me.
