    Hi guys…

Is there anyone available on the forum who is suffering from the diabetes?

How is your lifestyle and what medicines you are using?

Two in my immediate family are Type 2 diabetics. When the first one was diagnosed many years ago, I read the Joslin Diabetes Handbook which I highly recommend, by the way. Both of these family members started with oral medication for control of blood glucose and now have to inject insulin. Thei endocrinologist believes that their pancreases have now stopped producing insulin.

There are thousands of things to discuss, but I will just list a couple below:

    1. Carbohydrates are your enemy. They raise blood glucose levels which inhibits the red blood cells' ability to deliver oxygen to the body's cells. That is why blindness, kidney disease, strokes, and more are common results of uncontrolled diabetes; those organs are most sensitive to oxygen deprivation. It is a very slow moving disease, but once the physical problem develops, it is difficult if not impossible to heal.

    2. Blood glucose level spikes cause the most damage. You simply cannot avoid carbohydrates and do need some for nutritional reasons, so you want to slow the conversion of the carbohydrates into glucose so that blood levels of it rise slowly and plateau rather than a quick spike of the blood levels. One trick to use is the fact that fat slows the absorption of carbohydrates. So a good dessert to cheat on your diet with is ice cream!

    3. Almonds and cinnamon are good to add into your diet. Both tend to lower blood sugar levels.

    Hope that this helps.

I am not a nutritionist, of course. However, all flour and all fruit have carbohydrates and need to be carefully watched as to how they affect blood glucose for the diabetic. The person should be testing his or her blood frequently at the beginning to learn which foods have the most effect on blood sugar.

Diabetes is basically a metabolism disorder. Metabolism refers to the way our bodies use digested food for energy and growth.
