Woke up this morning and the thermometer read -4F (-20C) degrees! I am sure someone on DP can beat that low temp and make me feel better...

San Diego is my wife and my favorite place to vacation. It's been a couple of years so we definitely need to make it there in 2014.

By the Floridian standards it's pretty cold here: between 50F - 70F. It was cooler during the night though. Keep in mind, our houses are kinda paper thin. My wife had to run the heater to stay warm. I love when it's cold though.

I'm curious about all the frozen lakes/sea etc in North America that we see on the News. Is any of it skateable?

Absolutely. You need the ice to be about 1-foot thick and then it is generally safe to skate, snowmobile, or fish on. In most New England towns that I have lived in, either the police or the fire department would begin checking all lakes, ponds, etc., after a week or so of subfreezing tempertaures and would make an announcement when all town bodies of water were safe for recreation.

Of course, one still has to know enough to be wary of places where the water is moving (e.g., rivers, streams, etc.) because moving water does not always freeze as deeply as the others. And things can change fast. Just three days ago, it was very cold and we had about 4 inches of snow on the ground and the temps suddenly went up to 53F/11.6C and a fog rolled in that cut through the snow (melted it, basically). I am sure that same fog had a negative effect on the lake ice conditions. Of course, we are now two days into 5F/-15C temps, so I am sure the ice is fine again.

Of course, it is REALLY cold when you are out on the ice, espeically in temps like this. I know a few people who have frostbitten hands, feet or noses from staying out too long playing sports on the ice or snow.
